There are two versions of this lens. Has anyone bought the new one after having the old one? Is it worth the extra $100?

I've learned to give up "keeping up with the latest gear"... whether it's worth the extra $100 or not is up to you, but IMO, if you have the MkI version and it makes you happy, then why replace a perfectly good lens? Those who are now just looking into this lens, you have the option, buy a brand new MkI (as long as they are available) or MkII or buy a used MkI... as you can see from the samples here, the MkI performs great, but how much better does the MkII performs???

I think the difference between the new and old version is a motor for autofocus for the Nikon D40 and D60 which means nothing to us Canon owners and a new multi-coating to help with flare and ghosting.

Picked mine up (used) a few weeks back and love it. Very happy I didn't spend the extra $$$ on the 10-22.

Here's a couple from a local car show (vignetting done in PP - not in lens!)

Just got mine today from B&H and WOW!

All the comments/reviews were bang on. The colors, contrast, and sharpeness of this lens are even better than I was expecting, and the build quality is really great.

Couple that with the bargain price of the Mk I ($399 @ B&H) and I feel like I got a real deal.

Here's a shot of my favorite test subject taken 12mm 1/50 @ f4:

And another of one of our miniature lemon tree 12mm 1/13 @ f4:

I really like the mild perspective distortion and the fantastic center sharpness.

I can't wait until I go to Maine later this month to get some proper landscapes.

These are really nice pics everyone

I'm getting interested in this nice lens

My question is
I've never had a UW lens, The wider lens I've used is my 17-55IS

Is 12 mm that much of a difference?
I love the perspective that one can get with this ultra wide approach, and I get close with my 17mm on my 40D

Will this Tokina accentuate this FX?

Thanks

The Tokina 12-24 is a true Ultra-wide. On the 1.6 crop body, the 40D or 50D, it will not vignette at 12mm. The beauty of this lens over the Canon 10-22 or Sigma 10-20 is that the Tokina also fits the 1D and 5D bodies. However, you will see vignetting up to about 15mm. You can crop it out, but it's there. The real selling point for this lens though, is build and image quality. There is nothing third party about it. ;)

Oh, by the way, if you have seen the effect of buildings leaning in towards the top or out, that is caused by user error or on purpose. If the lens is held perfectly level, this does not happen. Buildings or trees leaning in at the top means you leaned the camera back to get more sky in. Leaning it forward produces the opposite. The same effect applies to subjects like long walls. Tilt to the right or left of perpendicular to the wall and one end will pinch down. :)

The Sigma will fit 1D and 5D as well.

Never got to try one, but it's advertised as "Not compatible with 35mm or digital cameras with larger image sensor than APS-C size". Have you actually tried it?

That just means it will vignette. If you go to the Tokina site, you'll see similar language there for the 12-24, "Digital single-lens reflex DX lens_ dedicated to digital SLR cameras with APS-C sized sensors."

I did some searches for the Sig. The reason the EF-s lenses won't fit the 1D or 5D is the rear end stick out too far, hit's the mirror. The Sigma is like the Tokina, short, so I guess it fits. Just never tried it.

This is great info guys
Thank you so much

I am very tempted to bite the bullet on this lens, more like experimenting with it than really need a UW

The price tag and performance ratio looks like a winer,

Will I miss having 10mm instead of 12mm? or is just not that big of a deal onece you get used to the 12mm?

Thank you ;)
