Question on Lens Flare

I figured this was the place to ask this one. I had some weird "color spots" on some pictures I took this past weekend. I am assuming that this is lens flare since the light was so harsh that day. Am I right or wrong? Below are a few that I have with the "flare ups" on them.

Also, if I use a lens hood will this help correct the problem in the future?

Are you using a UV filter? Those can create that kind of flare. Notice those spots are opposite a very bright part of the image (if you draw a line from the "phantom" spot through the center of the image, it will lead you to the bright spot where it comes from).

A hood won't help this kind of flare, but it's a good idea to use one, for several other reasons.

I did have a UV filter on there. It is clear, no tint to it at all. I was using it mainly as protection for the lens itself. My biggest fear is something flying up and scratching the lens. Is there something better I can use in place of the UV filter or should I just use a hood and no filter on the lens?

I ordered a hood today. I was hoping that would help some. I know that it is nice to have one on for some protection if nothing else.

Try it with just the hood and no filter. I suspect that your flare issues will become substantially less. I had tons of flare issues with my 28-135mm IS USM until I removed the filter...and presto....no more flare!
