This was shot in Venice during Carnival 2006. I'm new to photography and this forum. I use a Rebel XT with a Canon EF-S 17-85mm... Your comments are most welcome, I want to improve as much as possible.

Hi cyclpath, WELCOME TO THE FORUM. Technically, I'm not much help.I'm just learning my 350D too, but this pic is cool in an eerie way. Those eyes.
Best regards,
Jenny

Fundamental issue here is whether you shot RAW or not. If yes, then there is hope for the blown out highlights. If no, then probably not. We have no way of knowing of any post processing that you may have done.

The only way that I can imagine that those highlights were blown away so completely and yet so localized would be if the sun were directly overhead.

Other than the burned out highlights this capture was excellent - good freeze motion, excellent composition, and the DOF is just shallow enough to let the background go nice and soft.

Excellent image - other than the highlights problem - congratulations!

Great! In Raw processing it will be a simple matter to reduce the exposure and see how much, if any, of the lost detail can be recovered. Naturally, the rest of the image will be likewise affected, but that can usually be compensated for with the other sliders. Don't even try going more than 1 f-stop lower with the exposure setting, because that is the limit of what can be recovered.

If the over all image is exposed well I'd worry too much about it. I do think that blown highlights are made out to be more of a problem then they actually are. If it was overwhelming then yes it's a problem, but i don't see one in this case

I don't know what good composition is.... Sometimes for me composition has to do with a certain brightness or a certain coming to restness and other times it has to do with funny mistakes. There's a kind of rightness and wrongness and sometimes I like rightness and sometimes I like wrongness. Diane Arbus

good pose, good catch light.
I prefer verticle composition for portraits as the horizontal compo. has you cutting the hand at the fourth digit.

He'd have lost much more in vertical, half the fan and umbrella would have been lost. Well worth a digit

Besides fixing the highlights, how about intensifying the eyes. They look dull. Maybe some localized saturation, color change, sharpening, or something.
