Finally bought a 30D today and some lenses. This is one of the first pics I took with it.

Lens used for this shot is the 70-200mm f/2.8 L IS. Only things I have done to the shot so far is crop it and resize. (Hey, I'm new to dslr's, let alone post processing!)

Very nice. Is it an Akita? One suggestion would be to get the same type of portrait capture without the collar. You'd be surprised the difference it will make. I'd do a little PP to make it pop, but otherwise, a very nice pic.

Yep spot on. She is an Akita.

Interesting suggestion about the collar. Might try that on a better day. Sadly yesterday it had been raining almost non-stop all day, so that shot was quickly taken between downpours.

Beautiful and adorable dog. But not a duck yet, huh? Welcome and have a fun time with that 30D. Sounds like you are.

Just had a little play around in Photoshop. Even though the changes are relatively subtle, it makes a huge difference.

Welcome to the forums Dale.
May i suggest you use the focus point on that Mutt's eyes to give it more impact. They say that the eyes are the gateway to the soul and focusing on the eyeys are the way to go.

(wonder if people will twig we know each other?)

Hehehe Who knows? Depends if they believe the rumors or not. LOL

So when are we getting out and about on a photo session? I as yet have no idea how to set the AF points.
