Usually the file name is an indication of how many clicks. For instance, my camera is at IMG_3214.cr2, which means I've taken 3,214 shots so far.

All depends if you used a formated CF card the first time you used the camera. If you didn't then the camera carries on counting to what was the last number on the CF card. (only from canon to canon)

This is what I was told anyway !!!!

Although my 30D (which I received at the end of March before many stores had stock) and was brand new, just started numbering with the CF card that I put in it - 3,000 something for the first shot.

In 1934, Yoshida succeeded in producing a prototype of the first domestically made 35mm focal-plane shutter camera. A believer of the Buddhist faith, he named it "Kwanon" after the Goddess of Mercy, and placed an advertisement for "Kwanon Cameras" in the June 1934 issue of Asahi Camera magazine. - Canon Global History Page - Current Equipment FS items https://photography-on-the.net …/showthread.php?t=1228198

If that bothers you Ocean Blue, the 30D features a manual reset of the image count - see page 71 of the manual if you want to set back to 0.

I gave up along time ago of trying to keep track of this via the file numbering. Once it hits 9999 you have to start over again.

I use a manual system of renumbering and naming. I copy my files onto my computer and then renumber and rename based on my personal workflow. This is done by camera body type. Works well for me.

The in camera numbering does give you a decent indication of how many shutter actuations there have been. However, a canon service center can give it to you precisely.

My life is like one big RAW file....way too much post processing needed.

On some cameras (1 series) you can, on others you can't. Well... at least that first part (about 1 series) is my personaly experience, and second part (about everything else from Canon), is based on this what I read here and on other forums, so it might be different, but I would doubt so many people would be wrong :)

Nick - thanks for the tip. It didn't really bother me (although I did think it a bit quirky), but now that I know it's not set in stone, I may take advantage of that feature. I'm reading through the manual again and I'll spend some time on page 71. Thanks again.

Hey everyone,

As a former G6 user, I was SHOCKED just now when I noticed my first image on my 10-hour old 350D was numbered IMG_0840... So THAT's the answer - I stuck in partly used card formerly used by my G6. Whew! Saved me a trip to the store to complain!

Thanks!

K
