And don't forget soccer moms. I think canon target the 30D for them too. They are rich, want a nice camera to take pic of their kids. And they don't need to save for months and think for months before making the purchase;)

I guess that makes sense if you're on location and you want a quick snap to show people. I guess if I was a better photographer, my pics would be closer to where they should be before PP!

So I retract my earlier statement! Maybe it is a really useful feature for professionals!

I've just bought a 30D, and as I already have the 10D and a D60, I am able to compare the three cameras side by side.

Although the 30D is only a slight upgrade from the 20D, I must say that the overall quality of the body materials and 'feel' of the 30D is not as good as my 20D or even the D60. And certainly not what I expected from a 'prosumer' quality camera.

And when you compare the BG-E2 and the older BG-ED3 battery grips, they're miles apart. The BG-E2 being much more 'plastiky' and lacking the overall better quality of my older grips.

Perhaps that's the reason why the 30D is being so heavily discounted at the moment, (mine cost me £804.99 from Jessops) or is it because the Nikon D200 has finally knocked the 20D/30D off of its top spot?

£804.99 is "heavily discounted???" that's about $1433, and that's not discounted at all unless you're getting the lens with it. i got the 30d body for a little under 1400usd from canoga. you're post really doesn't make too much sense. you talk about quality, i'm sure you go by the motto "if it's heavy, it's made better." anywho, i don't feel that the 30d is "not impressive." i do feel that it's not a huge improvement over the 20d, but, the 20d is one hell of a camera! and that makes the 30d slightly better. my $.02

£804.99 is about $1433

I paid $1350 for mine. Retail stores selling for $1499.

I dont consider your price highly discounted.

I just ordered mine a few minutes ago from NewEgg after a couple days of researching prices. Other than the Brooklyn bait 'n switch shops, NewEgg was the best deal I could find. (2 cents of the normal $1399 and free 3 day shipping). Actually Canoga had it for less, but they are out or stock.

The 30D grip IS the 20D grip. One in the same- the BG-E2.

I love how the grip for the 10D actually molds to the camera and makes it look like a part of the camera rather then a bulky battery pack. Its how they made them for the Elan 7 cameras as well. Where as the 20D's looks like it is not apart of the camera. Not sure why Canon couldn't put a tiny peice of plastic to go up on the non grip end.

I would imagine reguarding to the Nikon 200 question, you are correct. I have always believed the 30D to be a "shut up and wait upgrade" meaning Canon has something in the works but after over a year of every Canon 20D user asking Canon when the new upgrade is coming out they released something in between of the 20D and the 50D. Both to increase sales of the 5D and also to keep Canon users from thinking about switching to Nikon. Because really what is the 30D? Its essentially a 20D with different software.

I was talking to a guy in my local Jessops about the 30D recently. He'd just been on a course at Canon and was told the 30D was released because the 20D had been upgraded internally so many times that it was essentially a different camera...

I still can't decide what to make of that, smacks of a marketing decision more than anything, a good way give the market a boost. But whatever it really is I love my 30D and it was worth every penny...

You can't compare UK and US prices directly . Original UK price for Body Only was £1099. 20Ds were still £850 over here after Xmas!

Wow!, did I stir up a hornest's nest, or what?

All I was trying to say is that in my humble opinion my new 30D with BG-E2 grip doesn't feel as well built as my 10D or D60 with the BG-ED3 grip. As for the imaging, I'm hoping that the extra resolution, the spot metering and the larger LCD screen will justify my purchase.

And yes, I do prefer a heavier/lighter camera. Is there a problem with that?
My photographic days go way back to the early Canon SLR's when they really were built to last. And before anyone say's I'm a boring old fart, how many digital cameras will be around in 20 years time?

I think you just caught a lot of people by surprise. As far as I am concerned my 30D is every inch a match for my EOS 100 film camera. I have no experience of series 1 bodies - film or digital - so can't compare but then I don't think its the same league anyway. If my 30D is 'poor quality' I would love to see good stuff! ;)

No problem here ... Man would this world be boring if we all had the same thoughts about things ;)

I like my 30D...however my first DSLR was the 300d and that is what I upgraded from so it is a big improvement.

I got the camera w/ lens for 1449 & no tax.

I hope they come out with a explain all book for the 30D like they had for the 300d and 350D (digital field guide I think it was called)
