The Butterfly Place

I spent a couple of hours at a local butterfly house this morning. Wasn't terribly impressed with my results, but these were two of the best. I discovered that I am only fast enough to capture lame butterflies... and then only with a flash!

Don't sell yourself short Becca, those are quite good. I really love the 2nd one with the wings spread out. Nice job.

I have to agree wuth Sandy & Dennis - these are quite good. The composition on the first is very good, on the second it's even better. You got them sharp with excellent DoF. I definitely think they came out very well.


You'll find it's a lot easier on a brighter day than yesterday was. Ideally you want a very bright, slightly overcast day, since direct sun can cause some serious highlights and shadows shadows in the leaves in the backgrounds.

Fun little place for a couple hours though, isn't it? If you can ever handle the drive, Magic Wings is about 5 or 6 times the size.

Any way you can get the little "Buggers" works for me!

Becca - Actually quite nice. there is another thread in this forum 'bout Butterflys. Check out Photosguy and my stuff. As you look at them you should feel comfortable with your images.

"Shootin' Flies" is not an easy subject. I shoot fast paced horse events during the season, and I go to butterfly rooms to 'sharpen-up' before they start. If you are pulling off 1 really good shot out of 6 or 8, you are right up there with the 'big boys'.

I know 2 people that make a nice piece of change from their Butterfly stuff.

Nice shots of the Zebra long wing (Zebra Heliconian) Becca. Sharp and nice composition.

Both are excellent, Becca. It can be tough getting them to sit still long enough to shoot. I always toss quite a few, and I'm happy to get a few really good ones like these.

Becca, well these two turned out great. Nicely composed and good variety between the two.

Those are great shots. Good composition...but how do you think the butterflies would feel if they knew you called them lame?
