I have tried to tackle the harder aspects of photography in a bid to leanr as fast as possible. Sometimes you skip over important subjects that can add to your knowledge base. I didn't take much stock in flower photography since I see A LOT of it with my photo club octogenarians. They seem to like red as well.

A small tribute to my older local photo club brethren who bring a lot of colour to my Tuesday nights when we meet.

I am certainly open to critique here...

I've been trying to rekindle my photography by tackling some of my sharpness and PP woes.

Either I need to ditch the 1024x768 laptop or print more. When I printed this, the depth and sharpness was stellar. It made me see my shots totally differently. With this shot you can see the top left goes over_chromatic and looks over saturated. The colour comes straight from RAW. So when I print it, the colour looks gorgeous and smooth.

Print more, see what I can offord compuer wise...

Pup: your shot looks like CGI. Looks so clean.

Thanks. I am terrible at PP at the moment plus I am colorblind which makes it almost impossible to tweak colors and such in a confident way. Tulips make FANTASTIC subjects. They are one of, if not, my favorite spring bulb. You should definately keep shooting flowers. It's a subject you cant really go wrong with. My shot was taken with a rented 17-85mm USM IS on easter weekend. One of my first shots on the 30D. Here's a different variety (I like the first one better, but some like this).

I'm colourblind as well. It's not easy. I shoot RAW so all I usually do now is set my velvia action at 10% or boost satuaration at RAW opening to +3-5%. Subtle boost. Then I pull back R,G or B if need to for a balance.

This way, I don't mess it up. Usually...

I'm colourblind as well.

I guess that explains it. To me the colors are so saturated everywhere that I can't see fine detail in the petals.
Since you shot RAW, I'd make another conversion for the center & blend it in with a Layer Mask to hold the detail & colors there.

I've never shot RAW and had to desaturate...

The print on my wall here at work looks very different than what show on the screen.

??? You just said in post #5, "I shoot RAW so all I usually do now..."? If you meant "in the raw", then it's an image I can live without? ;)

Ah, the classic internet lack of inflexion.

I always shoot in RAW. However, I have never had to desaturate. No colour was modified on this image.

The velvia action reference was in response to pup's post, not my picture. If I had done so with this picture I would have stated so. In post #3 I said "The colour comes straight from RAW".

I tried a couple of your posted link suggestions/tutorials with no luck as of yet. I need to spend some more time experimenting. Thanks for the tips PhotosGuy, even though I'm still trying to understand living without an image.

Looks like it's my fault. You said, "I've never shot RAW and had to desaturate..." & I "saw"
"I've never shot RAW, and had to desaturate..."
Sorry!

I tried a couple of your posted link suggestions/tutorials with no luck as of yet.

Hang in there! I think you'll like LAyer Masks when you get comfortable with them.
