Tim
There's a huge difference between "lots of effects" and "simple". I do like simple however for me this includes a little motion in my slide shows. Perhaps showing a couple of degrees of rotation movement in some slides, none in others. One slide zooming into another similar image to create that feeling of actually being there and moving with the subject.

I prefer a simple show that holds my interest. One image sliding into the next is not enough - unless the photography is of an extremely high standard (as in Jamies).

When doing a show for a wedding or event, you are telling a story. I have done a few shows and although my photography is not great (just learning really) I'm pretty pleased with the results of my shows. They have left my clients in tears (of joy might I add). :-)

So simple is good. But for me motion is required to hold the interest. Transitions should in the main remain pretty consistent. Not too much motion (or too little). A nice smooth flow through the show is what is required and as I say as a slide show, one image at a time just merging into another does not hold enough interest for me.

If I ever get a chance I'll post one of mine.

Cheers
Jim

PS Has anyone seen the shows by "Mark Ridout" on the Photodex web site? If not go there and have a look at his and let me know what you think. I think they are amazing shows - albeit done by Producer (which I have been using of late)

From another thread, link above

KISS!........Keep is simple stupid!

Basic stuff here, leave all the transitions for home movies, newbies and kids.

Once your photos reach a level they stand by themselves. Each to their own. I made that other thread to talk about philosophies rather than take away from Jamies fantastic show.

I've had brides cry from both types of shows, most people aren't used to professional level photos so anything will blow them away. Although I aim to please my customers I also aim to have high standards among photographers, with photos and shows that will stand the test of time. I'm already sick of my early shows with lots of movement, which i've watched numerous times with potential customers, you have to ballance the "wow" and the long term effects.

I agree with much of what you say Tim. I don't add a lots of transitions although i may change the timings of some and I don't have a lot of movement either. Just enough to hold your eye in the frame.

As you say each to their own. Simple should not mean bland.....

Although I agree that with your photography your shows will easily hold their own. my photography is not at that level (which may be the problem! :-))

...I have a question about the music. If you are hoping to use this show (which is great BTW, and the photography is top-notch), aren't you worried about copyright with the tunes?

Thanks for the compliment Daniel. I plan to use the show in my home studio only, not on my website or promotional materials. Hopefully the music licensing agreement that the DWF just negotiated with the major record labels will take me out of the gray areas a bit more...

Can you give us a little more detail on that music licensing Jamie?

I don't worry about copyright since I don't sell the shows. I have a sample show or two up with commercial music, but i'll tear it down some time and replace it with the royalty free music I purchased.

You can read about it on the DWF homepage (even if you're not a member): http://www.digitalweddingforum.com (external link)

Basically it's a $300 annual fee to license up to 50 songs for use on client DVD's and slideshows. Currently a lot of photographers live in a gray area where they make the client provide a purchased copy f the music they want on a DVD. This is still technically a violation of copyright. This program would allow photographers to legally use the music... The final product is still in the works.

interesting info. I wasn't aware of the 50 songs for $300 deal. ...definitely something to keep in mind.

...just had another look at your show and again, very nice. Very nice images. You seem to be an excellent wedding photographer.
