Best regards,
Andy

I'm not a big fan ... I prefer the hard hood to provide protection to the front glass

Haha, I agree.

However, a nice lens like the 85/1.8 deserves a real Canon hood, IMO
B+H has them for 24$ (but they are out of stock at the moment).
Plus, from the shape of the hood, I guess it might be better to control flare than the rubber hood (that looks on the image like it opens more).

I treated my 50/1.4 to one (and a nice B+W UV filter for protection against elements, fingerprints etc.)

Best regards,
Andy

Did you check the reviews at www.photozone.de? (external link)

As all three (Canon 10-22, Sigma 10-22, Tokina 12-24) seem to be rather similar in optical performance, I'd look at prices here (favouring the Tokina 12-24)

Best regards,
Andy

I have used fold up rubber lens hoods on several lens over the years.

They are compact, convenient, effective, inexpensive, and give you camera somewhat of a 5 MPH bumper.

I have only used them on fixed focal length lenses.

I really liked those harder rubber hoods that came with many of the Olympus OM Zuiko lenses. But they did not fold up.

Enjoy! Lon

What?

Lenses "deserve" nothing, despite what they cost. Use what works. Photography is not a fashion statement.

Enjoy! Lon

the difference in focal length between 10 to 12 mm may not matter much to me. and as you said price difference between tokina and canon is definitely an issue.
as mentioned in one of my earlier posts, it is very difficult for me to get a replacement for the lens if it turns out bad.
reason i am favoring canon and tokina is that i read few posts complaining about bad copies as against sigma.

Having a REAL (not rubber) hood protects the front element from impact, allowing you to go without a "protective" UV filter and save $25.

I know it's a rip-off, but your lens is an investment worth protecting that will last you many years.

Rubber hoods are for shooting against windows, such as shooting the interior of a vehicle through the rear window, or at an aquarium.

I use rubber lens hoods on both my 50mm and 35mm. Makes turning a CPL completely painless.
