Question,
What meter setting do you mostly use with the 300F4 IS?
I think my preference has been centre weighted.....

You need someone who has both.

I would guess they are both similar as long as the focus range limiter settings have a similar range.

The 300/4 MFD is much better than the 400/5.6 (max magnification 0.24X compared to only 0.12X for the 400/5.6).

A bit like a macro lens the 300/4 will be a little slower if you leave it on the full focus range, but one should compare eggs with eggs.

I am always wary of AF speed comparisons because there is no easy objective test, so any info is subjective; ie opinion.

Some great examples of what this lens can produce (along with the photographers of course!). I think that this will be my next lens purchase although it may take some time. I enjoy using the 200mm 2.8 Prime but I think by having the extra reach and IS I will be able to get a few more sports action shots ehich is something I plan to try out more. Now that the 50D has been released I will be getting that first then hopefully the 300mm F4 IS. Keep the samples coming:)

great pictures by everyone! this is my new favorite lens after reading this thread. i've always been interested in the 100-400L, but i now believe that this 300L w/ TCs is way better and quite versatile.

Here are a few more! I love the 300mm f/4 for football, marching band, even nature when I can get close enough (5 ft/mm or 15ft with the 300mm). These pics show the potential for static images. The next post shows the ability of the lens for sports.

Here are a couple of football pics (American football) taken with the 300 f/4. I may have used the 1.4X Mark II, I can't recall. It doesn't seem to show up in the exif.
