He swallowed it whole? I'm surprised.

Nice series of captures. How did you composite them?

Your 70-200 with the 1.4tc would be pretty dam good at the 300ish range with great IS and f4,if it was me i'd get something longer that you havent covered already, does it need to be canon?

No it doesn't, I am looking at the Sigma 120-300 S to be used with extender also.

I'm beginning to think that the AF on my 7D swallows  I do better manually focusing and I've MA'd it also. Some days I like the lens and others I want to sell it.

I would say its more the Lens than the Camera.

I'm having the same issues on my 70D, Some days i get really good shots and other days like 90% of my images are Soft. I fixed the front focusing Issue on my Copy but now its just all over the place when it comes to focus accuracy and it wasn't when i first got it. 1/500 with IS On seems to Generate A decent amount of sharp shots but anything else is brutal. I've shot 1/1000 with IS Off and on and got really soft shots. I came from a 55-250mm STM which nailed Focus a lot and it should considering its all new Tech. I do love my 300mm, It is sharper, Cleaner, and The Bokeh is much better but it really is a hit or miss 99% of the time with this lens. It's very Frustrating.

I feel you.
Focus is very, very close but soft when I least expect it. I believe it is either mirror slap or vibration when not using the remote for me. I think I'm going to have to bite the bullet and just use high ISO, as I tend to shoot at 100 feet

Yeah the IS is pretty bad, My 1/2500th shots seem to all be in focus so i guess i gotta find a good range from 1/800th - 1/2500th. Seems like 1 out of 4 Shots are in Focus on average. I will say though, I shot a few indoor Cat shots tonight at 1/200th and lightly holding the camera versus gripping the crap out of it helps. I also noticed i really put my eye up against the viewfinder which causes Shake. So it seems like you have to be really genital with this lens which is kinda hard when this thing is like a tank. lol

Tomorrow i'm going to take the 300mm with my Gorillapod and see if that helps.

I expect to see the cats in the cat/pet forum thread!
Close up I'd imagine them being sharp but farther away, 1/1000th of an inch movement really shows.

They are Wild Iguanas and i can get close enough to where the Camera won't focus anymore. 2.79 ft on my 55-250mm STM and 4.9 ft on the 300mm. They are all over the place here in Florida, But they aren't exactly easy to get close to. Most of them just scatter away. You have to take your time to get close to one. Take a shot, Move Closer, Take a shot, Move Closer, Etc...
