My kids all called me a hippie when I bought the Kombi :)

I have a few images I wouldn't mind getting blown up some time - but I can wait - it's not something I really yearn at the moment - I print A4 on the little squirter here at home and get pretty good, consistent results - and that will do for now (brother in law is a fuji pro and seems impressed with some of the pics he has seen).

Thanks for the comments on the web page - I must get around to updating that public one some time - most of those pictures were taken 2 cameras ago - I think only 2 from memory were taken with the 350D. None from the 5D.

The 5D - well, I love it - I am shooting way too many pictures with it - but having a blast doing it. I bought the lenses before the 5D so I had really pre-chosen what I was going to be doing body wise.

As for being here... I was kidnapped by an unscrupulous employer who managed to stop me going back by closing down the NZ operation while I was over here. So I married an OZ girl and decided to stay.

And Dave (Choderboy) paid about $2 a print for A4 from Teds in Pitt Street - I saw the prints - they were excellent.

Hey Trent,
C41 are pricey, thats why I get my smaller prints done elsewhere.
Also if you order larger quantities or more jobs with them you should be able to work out a better deal with them.
I am cheeky and always get my prints much cheaper than the labs advertise, if you tell them you are a photographer ( I am ) then they will want your business.
HN prices are much cheaper, $5.95 for an 8x12, but I pay less as I am a regular customer, and cheeky enough to ask for a discount.
Good luck

And yes beer is evil, it stops me breathing in my sleep, thats why I dont drink it.....

Kiwibloke....
$2 for an A4 print, is that 8x10 or 8x12..??? cause that is cheap.
I know who to ask when I need to borrow a lens on my next shoot.
Just to clarify your statement, there is NEVER too many images to shoot, on my shoots I regularly take approx 2000 per day. Now just imagine having to select the best images and PP them.....

well, Dave did say $2 for A4 - he may have negotiated it - A4 is 11.69" x 8.26" - and, yes, you had to pick up - that's where I met him - at the coffee shop over the road.

You still PP? ;)

Actually, I found a lot of my need to PP disappeared with the 5D - and it wasn't my skills that caused that - for some reason, I am getting better balanced, sharper pix.

As for borrowing a lens for your next shoot - you know I don't let them out of my sight, don't you? So I guess I would just have to accompany you on the shoot... :)

Hey Trent,
they are great prices, but for us on the Nth Beaches it wouldnt be cost-effective to drive there for only a few prints. Good info to think about.
I am only 2 mins drive from HN and I generally drive that way a few times a week so it very handy for me.
I also take my images on a CF card, most of my images for printing are 7mb - 10mb in jpeg format.
I always work with psd files, and make a jpeg (high quality) file for print purposes only.
I have used Photoshop CS2 extensively for over 12 months and am still learning better ways to pp my images.
Cheers
Marty

Hey Kiwibloke,
dont you trust me with your lenses...??? only joking as I have only ever loaned my L lenses once and I didn't sleep for the weekend..!!!
I have heard from other owners of the 5D they spend less time PP, it all depends on the subject and the settings. For my commercial work I usually only do a bit of PP work, but for my personal projects I can spend hours testing new 'arty' techniques. B/W photography is my passion and Urban decay, so sadly no image out of the camera can give the desired result for me.
Maybe if you loaned me your 5D then I might be convinced.

Hey Kiwibloke,
pp also depends on the size of the print you require.
On smaller prints you generally dont need to do a lot of work.
On poster size prints, you would have to do some pp to get great results.
Another adavntage of PP is that you can change the look of the print to your taste.
But it can be time consuming.

 Good try!

Actually, I have met a couple of people from this site so that we could try different lenses on our cameras - and I have no objection to a meet if someone wants to try a 5D for an hour or so.

Hey Kiwibloke,
Next commercial shoot I do I will give you a call.
If you are happy taking your 5D and L glass out through the heads and into the ocean then you are welcome.
Be warned you and your gear will probably get a bit wet...??
And with salt water too, even more of a worry.

Marty,

What do you shoot to get 2000 shots in a session. You must get RSI ?!?!?

Trent.

Marty,

In the past 3 weeks the 5D and 70-200mm were soaked in salt water at Bondi (during the big waves) and the 5D and 24-70mm were soaked in rain at the Anzac parade (which is why the Sigma is now manual focus) so I am not too concerned about a bit of moisture.

And I would like to know what takes 2000 pics a shoot, too. What body are you using?

John

I shoot with a 1DmKIIn,
2000 shots in a day is easy for me.
I shoot sports, yacht racing commercially.
My last shoot was only 30 yachts racing, that was easy.
In previous shoots I have had to shoot 200+ yachts in multiple simultaneous races, that wasnt quite as easy, but still a lot of fun.
And taking 2000 shots usually gives me 500-600 perfect shots to keep, the others are usually discarded because I am not happy with composition, slightly different angle, boat movement, shadows, etc.
And Kiwibloke, hope you didnt get any water in you camera, I was actually shooting the big wave surfing off Manly and other local beaches. Its difficulat as you have to get close to the action, but also close to the sea spray, which I still worry about.
Trent, RSI....no problem there, the issue is holding camera and lens for over 8 hours on a moving boat.
But even on a personal shoot I will take a few hundred shots.
