I would say nothing else quite fills that spot.

You will either have to get a refurbished G6, which have a full guarantee,
or try to make a list of the lhings you want in a camera and see what matches that.

It sure does look like there will be no more G-Series models from Canon. That's a shame. I think Canon wants you to buy either the new S3 model or one of their entry-level DSLRs. There appears to be nothing in between. Actually, the closest camera I've found to a G-Series is the Sony R1, which is my new "travel camera".

I hope that the G-Series forum here on POTN won't fade out.

The Sony seems like the best bridge camera, although there is some good offerings from other manufacturers that include longer lenses (Oly, Panasonic I believe)

You can get G6's on ebay and from canon refurb outlet still - just because they're old doesn't mean they are bad - the features are still pretty good.

Can it be possible that Canon is working on releasing a APS-C sensor rangefinder type camera as an alternate to a DSLR. Fitted with a EF mount and a custom ultra thin kit zoom ala Pentax???

Pentax have the LE 40mm pancake, I've not seen (and it's not for want of poring) any mention of an ultra-thin zoom.

And a zoom.. on a rangefinder...???

:-)

perhaps instead of a rangefinder it could just be a EF lens mount P&S, with an EVF...

hang on a minute - thats something no-one wants.

STOP IT, STOP IT I SAY

I think Canon has dropped the G series.
I think that the G6 is so capable that it hurt sales of the Canon digital SLRs,

and all those ghastly bazooka lenses $$$$$$$$$. I mean my sis was showing off her dumb Nikon D50 +200mm lense, she'll never understand that the SLR NikonD50 is inferior to the little G6, a pocket rocket if there ever was one.

You are right, the G6 beats it in all important issues like shooting speed, focus accuracy, sensor size, light sensitivity and image quality :lol::lol:

Best regards,
Andy

PS: When I got my G2 in 2003, it was a good camera with good image quality available for 800$, while the Canon 10D and Nikon D100 (both great cameras withgreat image quality) were both around $ 1500 excluding lenses. If I were to spend 800$ on a camera today, there would be no mistaking that I would rather get a D50 or 350D than a compact, fixed-lens camera with a small sensor.

So I assume that - while there certainly still is a number of loyal G series fans - the number of users willing to shell out a quite considerable amount of money on a quality camera AND preferring a G series camera to a DSLR is a lot smaller than it was only a year ago.

Terminating the G series is a deliberate marketing strategy by Canon to force the public into buying dSLRs and "bazooka" lenses$$$$ + accessories$$$$$.

The compactness of the G6 over the dSLR can be a big advantage (less accident-prone, more convenient, portable, (concealable from thieves)). I have a camera with me most of the time. The G6 is smaller than the G5 and G3.

Apart from fanatics and professionals most photographers would hardly recognise the difference in quality between the G6 and a mid range dSLR.

True for landscapes.
Not true for portraits.

While most people who don't know photography will not be able to explain the 'Wow' effect of a portrait where shallow DOF was creatively used, they will still recognize it immediately.

Best regards,
Andy
