Apr 29, 2006 10:14 | #2 aslo I almost bought an 18-55 by canon for about 95.00 but then I read the reviews and seen images taken and it seems to be soft and has a lot of the "digital purple fringe" compared to the other lenses.

It's actually fairly good stopped down. There's no shame in getting it and trying to get the most out of it as well as learning a lot along the way. FWIW, If you can spend $400, there is the superb Sigma 18-50EX f2.8.
