So I have been thinking and trying everything. I get soft pics 90 percent of the time from a tamron 28-80 and was considering sending my 20d in for an inspection. I have tried tripods fast shutter speeds high ISO and still almost 90 percent of the time its soft. So I call tamron and ask them a few question and they said that yes that lens is good for a film SLR not digital... Can anyone tell me why?

You may just have a bad copy of the lens. The 28-80 lens you speak of should work fine in digital cameras. The only negative is that with most digital SLRs (with a crop body) you lose the wide end of the focal range since it will act like a 45-128mm on your 20D. So that's probably what he meant by "good" for film and not digital.

Check out this Tamron link. It shows that the lens you have works on digital.

Anyway, as I said, you probably have a front or back focusing issue with the lens. Try taking a shot in AF, then micro adjust the focus in MF to see if you can get a sharper image. If so, just send the lens in for repair. I highly doubt it's your 20D that's at fault.

Nope... it's not a bad copy... I have recently experienced the same issue with the SP AF28-105mm f/2.8 LD (non-Di) and came up seriously soft with my EOS 20D. I ran the lens over to the local repair center and was told the very same thing. Film... it's great... digital... its crap. This is not a cheap lens... it was a mainstay for Tamron in the film market and still is. My EOS-3 has no problem with it at all.

They are currently replacing the circuitry in it to try and adapt it to the focusing of the digital, but that seems to be merely an attempt and not proven. The XR glass on the Di lenses seems to be the main change in these lenses.

Looks like if you want to use an APS-C sensor digital camera (ie, EOS 20D/30D, Rebel, XT), when it comes to Tamron... its a Di or Di II certified lens or suffer softness without end.

That is all...

I only suggested a bad lens because of this thread:

and this one:

Seems it works fine for other people with digital SLRs.

Tamron says the 28-80mm f/3.5-5.6 Aspherical Conventional Lens may be used on digitals, but was designed for use on film SLRs. My guess would be that it must depend on which digital you have chosen. Upon first blush, this is not a very direct statement. Obviously, the thread poster having serious issues with his lens. My own result with a non-Di or Di II has not been good, either.

My recommendation is try and sell this one to a "filmy" and just buy the Di or Di II lens you need. My recommendations are:

  • Tamron AF 18~200mm f/3.5-6.3 XR Di II LD Aspherical (IF) MACRO
  • Tamron SP AF28-75mm f/2.8 XR Di LD Aspherical (IF) MACRO

This is based on the results I have personally received with both lens. These are reasonably priced and will return excellent results without emptying your wallet. :) Tamron also gives six-years of warranty on their lenses. More than any other manufacturer. It seems to be a reasonable bet they will provide excellent wear and use over time.
