Totally stupid question, but I can't google the answer. Is the Rebel Xt's kit lens a USM lens? I don't have it with me to check the barrel. If not, what's the difference between the 2 and the price difference as well?

This is what I have heard, read...

The one that comes in the Kit is not. The one you can buy in a box off the shelves is.

The one that I got with my first 20D was the USM model. Weird.

<shrug> I know that they had the 18-55mm and a 18-55mm II.

Discussion on Non-USM vs USM version (external link)

You can find out, by trying to FTM. another word...try focusing it while half pressed on your shutter button. If it feels like you are forcing it, or it start clicking, you have the non-usm. the USM version will be easier to rotate the focusing ring.

To my knowledge even the ones that are USM are not the ring type(better type) but are the micro motor type. So not really a good advantage over the non-usm.

Some retailers like B&H have their own version of the "kit", providing the camera with the USM version of the 18-55 for a slightly higher price.

In the UK the USM version can be bought with a body as an upgrade to the non USM version for a small charge.

These are shots of the 18-55mm II USM lens I had till recently.

Actually, no. The 18-55 USM uses the micro-USM motor, not the ring USM, which does permit FTM wherever it's found. The only FTM using a micro USM motor (external link) is the 50 f/1.4.
