20D AI Servo - auto AF point?

I've looked though a number of other posts and don't see the answer to this. Hoping someone out there can help. When using the 20D in AI Servo mode, does auto AF point selection work? I was playing with selecting AF points and then thought I put it back to auto AF point selection, but none of the points light when I press the shutter half way. I believe that means all are selected, not that I'm in auto select.

BTW, I'm not using any CF settings. The instructions I've read sound the same for selecting All points or auto selections. I'm stumped. Thanks.

Hi TCaran.
I have not really used AI Servo, So I just grabbed the 20D and from what I can conclude!
The focus point that I selected stays on that point and then AI Servo mode will track the object you are Photographing so long as you have shutter button half way down. It seemed to stay on my selected focus point. Also I could change focus points and it tracked on the new position. Hope this makes sense! ( Someone correct me if I am wrong)

Don't know about the 20D, but AFAIK the 1D always starts focussing on the center AF point with auto AF point selection, and then switches to another point when needed. I would have liked some visual confirmation of the point used however.

Thanks. That part I get - it's how do you change from selecting AF points to letting the camera select the AF points automatically?

if you select a focus point then the AI servo will focus at that point. It doesnt light up because in Al servo it doesnt ever light up because it never maintains one focus.

press the AF selection button, then press in on the thumbstick till all the points light up. then the camera should to it automatically. i perfer to set up the point for what composition i want and using that point myself. camera tends to jump around a lot more on all points. and with the thumbstick its easy to switch points while you are shooting.

Well, I use CFn4-3, and have the '*' button set to use center AF point, and the one next to it ('X', the button the 20D misses) to auto AF point selection. Wouldn't know about the 20D, but I guess if you nudge throught the AF points and reach the outermost point, one more nudge will light all points, right?

OK, but if you DON'T select a focus point, what is it focusing on to start with? If in your frame you have a soccer player with a tree in the background, how do you know which it is focusing on?

Thanks, but that is what I tried. I don't see it doing what you describe - jumping around - as is normal when it's in auto AF point selection.

I had to focus on something to start with, So I had to have a selected focus point (The middle one being my choice since auto focus was invented) and everything I track with the shutter button half way down gets tracked by the middle focus point! Works for me!
Think I will start to use it now ! I like this AI Servo! Thanks for the thread . I have just found a new toy to play with! Cool!

Twisted - So when you put it in AI Servo mode, did auto work, or did you have to select a focus point? (I just tried it myself - can't wait to use it.)

What I do here in 99% of the cases is to manually select the center focus point and use it to track your subject. The center point (with a 2.8 or faster lens) is the most accurate focus point.

When on auto AF point selection, the 1D series initially focussus with the center point, then keeps tracking using all points. (for instance if the subject moves to the left of the VF, the left AF point 'takes over') Only drawback, like said, is you don't get any confirmation what AF point is doing the focussing.... (Also after the shot is taken, when you display the AF points, all are highlighted)

If you read Rene's post, he has already answered your question. If you are in AI Servo mode and you set the AF to automatic AF point selection, the camera will first use the center AF point. It will then continue to use the center AF point to track the subject and, if necessary, switch to any of the other AF points if the subject falls on those AF points while moving.

What you won't get with AI Servo, and this is true no matter which AF point you or the camera select, is a confirmation of either focus or which AF point is currently in use.

AI Servo works the same way on all EOS digital cameras.

Thank you all for helping me out on this. It just wasn't obvious from the manuals I read. I'll also be able to better use AI Servo. Thanks again!
