Got this female Yellow-Bellied Sapsucker (the male has a red throat) at the Mer Bleue bog area yesterday, April 29th. These shots are rather ordinary but I liked the visible lines of holes that Sapsuckers like to drill in trees. The sap then accumulates in these holes and the bird comes back to drink up...hence the origin of their names.

Nice shots, Daniel. Did you hear their distinctive drumming? We have one that sits on the back of a road sign and blasts his "rat a tat tat tat tat tat tat' every morning. I think he was on my neighbor's satellite dish too!

Yes, every year they like to perch on the metal bus stop signs and drum on those..very loud and funny. Both the male and female do this and they respond to each other...at each their own bus stop a few blocks away from one another!

Nice captures..Both angles look good. How close did you get (How much of a crop is this?). Great for me to see this bird close up..Thanks for sharing; and I hope I get a chance to see one of these.

I wish I got to name birds. Robins would be Red Bellied Wormsuckers. See, I could do it!

Anyway....these are awesome shots. Getting the holes in there really makes the shot for me.

I like the fact that you kept the holes in the frame....realy defines this bird well.

2-3 pairs are currently claiming territory at Petrie. Fun to watch and photograph.

Love these! I agree that the holes really add to the picture. It really helps you see what these guys are all about.

Good job!

Great shots of the sapsucker! I really liked the info on the holes, thanks.

The bg looks almost like a backdrop to me. Did you ps it or is that the original?

Nice pics. I had a yellow bellied sap sucker drill holes in a pecan tree in my back yard............about 3 years ago. The perfect rings of holes are still there, but I have yet to see him comeback.
