Just saw and article on the local news about Canon New Zealand finding 12 350Ds (black and silver ones) that all functioned as they should, but when the box was opened were packaged in the wrong material, and the none of the serial numbers on the bottom of the bodys matched the serial numbes in the EXIF. There evidence of tampering to the serial number plate on the base of the camera, although it was very well done.
And none of the cameras came from Canon NZ, they were all bought into the country by parrallel importers, known as "Grey Market" over seas.
Canon won't say where they got the cameras from, so a large part of it is a marketing excercise to try and get some of the market share back, but it also shows you have to be careful when buying Parralell imported, or Grey market products.
