Good morning everyone (UK Time)

I have been using an old pistol grip from a long redundant video camera on my 100-400mm lens. It makes it a bit more manageable - it would be nice if it had a remote release connected to it.

Has anyone been down this road yet. It will be interesting to know your thoughts.

Does anyone out there know if there is such an item available in the Canon accessories list?

Thanks

There were some photos ages ago of people using pistol/rifle stocks and putting remote release cords in place of the trigger... I don't have them myself but someone might know where to look..

Hi Jim - Thanks - yes I've seen these rifle things, they date back to when I was very young and very keen but was unable to afford even a few flash bulbs and counted the cost of each 5x4 black/white plate I exposed.

No, not a rifle thing but a simple pistol grip is all I need. I don't want to be picked off from a rooftop by the anti-terrorist squad thinking I'm using a mini rocket launcher.
Anyway - the IS on the 100-400mm works like a dream.

Its probably a case of a home-modification.

Buy a cheap ADIDT remote on ebay, and then take it apart - the actual workings are incredibly simple (I believe). Just work out a way to attach the button in the right place.

edit: Older ones exist. If you used something like this (external link), then you could modify the remote release to be triggered by the sticky-out prong thing.

I made one from the grip on a flash bracket and a piece of aluminum bar stock. Bend the bar about 20* and drill holes for the telephoto collar and the grip. Then the grip can be mounted inclined a little out at the bottom end. Works great, makes it easier to hold telephotos steady. However I don't use it much anymore. Kind of makes the camera hard to carry and set down.
