So I was at an airshow yesterday, and my lens would not focus for anything, so I attempted to compress it and focus again (go to 100mm) and it made a spring noise. I removed it and looked throught the rear element, there is a loose black ring inside. Looking from the front element you can tell its one of the stepped rings that is towards the front of the lens. I was so upset I left the airshow and went home. Off to canon Irvine I go

Oh, bummer. Are you the original owner of that lens? Has it been through any kind of abuse that you can remember?

Yes I am the original owner, little less then 5 months old (Still not paid off yet) and has never been dropped or abused, doesn't have any scratches or marrs. The internal piece is intact, just no longer held in place

Mine did the same thing. Got it repaired in 10 days and it's been perfect ever since.

I wouldnt worry too much in dealing with the Irvine service center. They will take care of you. Ive dealt with them and have had nothing but glowing results.

Sounds like it'll be better than new in no time. Let me know how it goes.

Well I drove it up to Canon's west coast service center (a benifit of living close by) on Wed, and on Friday I was able to pick it up better then new. They did a complementary cleaning while they had it apart and its better then new!!

Yep it's a pain, but at least you are close to the repair facility. I had a "stiff/difficult focusing" problem with my 70-200 at about 6 months. Shipped it in and got it fixed (about 2 weeks of longing!) and it's been fine since.

How old was your lens and was it in warranty? If not what did they charge you?

Wow, sorry to hear that but it sounds like it turned out okay!

I'm going to order that lens the end of this month I hope but that worries me especially when someone else had the same thing happen.:( :( :(

Lens was about 6 months old, fully warrantied. Couldn't have been easier to deal with. Done in less then 24 hours. ( I didn't pick it up until friday because of my work schedule)
