Nice experiment, Dennis. My eye is not calibrated well enough to have a problem with the TC's combined. But it's really nice to see the results with each TC individually.
I'm guessing you wouldn't hear any complaints from the forum if, out of the goodness of your heart, you repeated the tests with a stationary target.
I'm just saying...

The details in the combined are very shallow. It does not have the clarity of the either of the two by themselves. I have to send my 100-400 lens to be repaired, the autofocus is faulty. So I will not be posting in birds for a while.

Nice work Dennis. 1120mm not including the crop factor? Not bad at all.
I'm guessing you used the mirror lockup?

No, just took the picture normally. The birds were about 20 feet away on feeders, so I waited until one would land on the branch.

Well done indeed. Experimenting like this is always fun especially when the outcome is this good.

Thanks for the comments, when I started I thought the 2.0 TC would not be very good, and I didn't think the two could be combined.

How did you focus?split prism screen?

I have a normal 20D, just focused by eye.

Interesting experiments, Dennis. I would be happy with any of these captures, though I can see more detail in the first two.

Thanks much Dennis, this was the experiment(1.4 stacked with the 2)I was hoping some one would do. I just went 2 long weeks without my long bird lens. Now is the time to try your Canon 100 mm Macro on birds. Thanks again!

Hi Joe,
The first two do have more details, since I was sending my lens to be repaired and my autofocus wasn't consistently working I thought I would play with the TCs. You do have to focus by hand (even taping the three contacts wouldn't have help me since my autofocus wasn't working), so I used a tripod and waiting until a finch sat on my "magnetic" branch. The combine shot looks OK until you blow it up and then it looks fuzzy. Maybe when my lens comes back I re-do it with a statue or something stationary.

Thanks Zip, the experiment was interesting to me. Canon tells me 5-10 days, maybe sooner for the lens repair. I will be using the 100 mm Macro lens for macro, I gotten a little rusty in that area anyways.

I'm impressed with the results,. all across the board. I've never been happy with the results i got with the 2X on most lenses especially zooms. Yours look pretty good.

Sorry,. but this is a disaster,. you've blown out huge areas of the image (made them 100% white) and added a purple color cast..
Though the original image might be improved with some delicate cleaning up in an image editor,. the intention was to show the results of the optics, so editing would detract from the post,. and this attempt was far from a light dusting,. it was more like pounding it into the dust. :o

Leo, have not seen your posts for a long time. I have been thinking of selling my 2xTC, which was one of the reasons for the experiment. Thanks for stopping by.
