Took this of my son and his puppy recently. I didn't have my flash on, but I like it. What do you think?

No flash is fine, but, DANG, the color cast needs to be fixed. How do you feel about this?

Rad

Wow. Much better. The original was pretty washed out, and I ran it through the velvia action and got the above result. I guess I'll have to revisit the PS.

Thanks to both of you.

Here's a quick edit of another shot. I'm getting alot of color noise when I try to lighten it any more. I wasn't shooting raw because I knew I wasn't going to have time to do much processing. I'm sure regretting it now.

I don't really like the no flash. You can hardly tell what kind of animal is there. Be smarter than your camera and realize when a fill flash is needed.

Thanks for the comment. I was standing on a rock over a lake taking pictures of ducks when I turned around and saw them. It was a quick shot, but you're right-it wouldn't have taken any time to pop the flash up.

The origional shot doesn't look near as good as this edit...I'd be very interested in knowing how you made the change...I'm new to editing and find information on how these type changes are made very intersting.

Couldn't tell you how Focus did his, but to re-edit my version for brightness, all I did was duplicated the layer, set the blend mode to SCREEN, then erased the sky from the Screened layer only (to turn the now white sky back to blue), flattened, then added a little magenta.

Total time, 30 seconds.

Thanks for the info, Radtech. I thought the fix by focus had way too much color noise, and I couldn't figure out how to get it right. I _really_ need to work on my PS skills along with my technical shooting skills. Now that I'm out of school I hope to have more time to devote to my photography. Thanks again.
Jeff

To fix the chroma noise (green and red flecks) I used THIS TECHNIQUE (external link) from the nice folks at LL.

Then to fix the luma noise (slightly darker flecks) I selected an area of your son's left cheek and chin, copied that to a new layer, applied a Gaussian blur then flattened it.

These were both done on my first edit, before I even did the brightness edit.

I went with the quickest easiest way... I duplicated the layer, curve, then deleted the new sky...and the quickest easiest way is not always the best :) I think Rad got the best result here, he got as much light as he could without noise
I really like that picture, it's a shame no flash was used...what caught my attention was how each one of them is looking in a different direction...in other words, you don't have to look in the same direction to be friends.

I'm noticing a lot of duality in your pictures Rad, or maybe there's just too much duality in my mind.

Cheers !

Thanks again to both of you.
Focus- I really liked them looking opposite directions as well. In the second of two quick snaps (the second shot I posted) the dog is looking higher than the first shot, which I think I like more than the first one.

It would have been right the first time if it had been taken by Rad.
