Nice attepmt but a little soft. Wish there was some catchlight in the eye.

Yeah, most of my shots have been turning out quite soft and have required sharpening in PS. I might have to ditch the TC2 and invest in a 100-400 L.

you are not brutal enough when it comes to post processing.
There is more to enhancing an image than just USM.
Here is your image post processed further.
your lens is fine, just remember that the camera will not do much post processing but rather it's what you do on the comp at home.
were you to print that image on paper in 6x4 it would look tack sharp but the webs is quirky.

Well I did say to you in IRC that I'm a STEEEEEP learning curve.

The clarity of the modified image really brings this excellent shot out and very good blurred background making the close up of the gull stand out. Well done.

I liked the background and foreground combination too. Some catch-light in the eye would have been nice - the eye looks like a black hole now.

What do you mean by catchlight?
on my monitor i can see dales reflection in the gull's eye.

Oops! My mistake. I was seeing the image with wrong monitor settings!

The settings I use normally are different(very low brightness, to save the eyes) from the settings I use to see images(calibrated values). So it goes..
