I was looking at the post, and sorry if this sounds super noobish, but what does the L stand for in the lens? thanks

since i've been reading and they say that lenses in L are alot sharper and better. I'm newish to SLR's, been photographing with my pro-photographer friend's cameras but never really asked questions. Thanks

The best way to describe an "L" lens is for you to go down to your local camera shop... put an EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS USM lens on your rig and pop a shot or two... then ask for a 70-200mm f? from any other mfr... and do the same.

Carefully print your shots and compare the two... and find out first-hand what "L"-glass (a specialized mixture of optical sand) is all about. Also, whip out the credit card for the $1660.00 price of the lens you're going to being going just "ga-ga" over.

Enjoy the sport... because you have just asked the $64,000 question... and I'm not far off on that, either.

This gets asked a ton.

L's

Canon's very best lenses

Constant aperture (most are 'fast' lenses)
built to pro standards (metal not plastic)
better coated optics
usually come with hood
many weather sealed (only works with 1 series bodies)

thanks for all the answers!! *and thanks for not calling out my noobness!!*
hmph. so it only works for the 1d series eh? i got the 350d, so i guess i don't have the luxury of getting the luxury lens *also i'm a poor poor newly graduated college kid who wants to get into semi-pro photography* but on the bright side, i don't need to go even further in debt since it's not compatible with my camera :P

The L's work on all the EOS. The only thing lacking is the weather sealing on the 350D. So, bring on the debt. You need a 24-70L or a 70-200L or a 100-400L

hmph... interesting, just looked at the website that sonex posted.. saw the 70-200mm L lens, and i recognize it! it's been the lens that i've been playing around for for months with my friend's 20d kit! hah, no wonder the photos looked so good when i took it with his setup. hmph... at least now i realize why it's so good, and that i guess i won't be able to achieve it with my sigma 70-300mm f/4.0-5.6 lens... *cries.. the pain of playing with godly stuff then stepping backwords*

Stands for Luxury. Canon uses "L" to denote Professional grade lens.
Sigma uses "EX" for excellence, Tamron-Super Performance, Tokina-Pro for Professional?
