Maybe it's just me.. but, I don't want these kinds of cameras to go by the wayside.. 35mm point and shoots is one thing, I think they've served there purpose but not medium format and large format to me it seems so classic and timeless it's incredible that the way that gentlemen was taking his shots is the exact process that was used decades ago I guess i'm a little romantic but I like that idea. He was talking to me about how it's getting harder and harder for him to get his supplies.. as of now he special orders his paper from Germany.. Now, i'm digital. it's all i've known but I have an appreciation for film photography and it is incredibly beautiful. I'm not going to go out and buy a SLR or a medium format camera... I don't think I have the patience not to mention resources to attempt it. But, that's all the more reason for me to have a healthy dose of respect to those that do.

Is this a forum for total NEWBIES?

I went out of my way to register for this forum to tell a few of you guys that you are nothing more than "Snap-Shot Clowns"....talking about 4x5 View Cameras as being "Ansel Adams Cameras" etc... wtf? Do you even know what a View Camera is for...how do you think that Architectural Images are made? When you walk out into the woods and point your little digital camera at your sister and take her snap shot and upload it here, thinking that you have recorded something special for posterity I absolutely bust at the seems laughing. I could go on for hours and hours but suffice it to say...very few people these days know what it means to be a professional photographer and very few people are born with the "gift of sight".

Welcome to POTN I guess...
This is normally a friendly place. There is also a few forum rules here. One of them is: "4. (The "don't be a jerk" language)" ;)

Sure, a lot of people don't know a view camera from personal experience...
However, a lot of older photographers didn't either I suppose... So what?

I don't think Sebastiao Salgado would have been happy to use a Sinar either. Same goes for a sports photographer for instance...
Different tools for different jobs.

You have rights here, & one of them is the right to not post contentious, flaming opinions.

I could go on for hours and hours...

Sorry, but you won't get that far here.
Re-read these, & either play nice, or go back where you came from.

Looks like a Wista, a Japanese camera (external link) that has models priced from US $1,200-2,200. Expect to spend several thousand dollars on a lens, lensboard, film holder and tripod before you're ready to get images.

That's nonsense. You can make your own lensboard. You can buy a normal lens for 50 bucks. Even I have a nice 135mm lens for LF which I've got for free.

I do agree that shooting with large format is a beneficial experience. It makes you re-evaluate the digital playground and you take a different view on what photography used to be and what other approaches exist beside "burst mode on Servo"

At those sizes, it's not about sharpness anymore.

It's about richness... and smoothness of the final image. You capture so many photons that the picture has more detail.

It's like comparing a point and shoot with a DSLR. You get more quality with a DSLR.

I've shot with an 8X10 Deardorff, 4X5 Horseman and 4X5 Calumet.

And the biggest reason for shooting LF is control. You can process each sheet of film for each exposure (zone system) giving you total tonal control and also tilts & shifts which give you greater control of focus and perspective. Anyone serious about landscape should seriously learn to use one and learn the zone system.
