This was with my 70-200f4 lens. I know I could have cropped it more but what do you think about the sharpness, saturation and contrast?

20D, 17-85 kit lens, 70-200 F4, 50 1.4, Amvona AT CF 994 Tripod, Manrotto Monopod that I have never used and a 580EX Flash

Sharpness, saturation and contrast are spot on. I would crop without a doubt, as the story is in front of him, not behind. I would crop out most everything behind the helmet, including that inexplicable blue thing. Also, the red in front should go, either via crop or clone.

Caught my eye. Very sharp and commanding colors.

In the medical field, there is a truism:

"Ask three different doctors the exact same question and you'll get five different answers."

That's not too far from the case here at POTN either. That being said, I like your crop, but, if it were me, I would have left another 20% or so in front of him. He is a race car driver. He moves fast. He has nowhere to move to in your crop. A bit too static.

In other news: Color, contrast and sharpness are still perfect.
