Just got the Tokina 12-24 delivered from B&H a few hours ago. Took a some of shots and I have to say it is a nice lens. I can't wait for the weekend!

But have the no-threads-in-front-of-the-filter problem. I assumed I was better off with a thin protector filter with the wide lens, but forgot to make sure it had front threads (duh!) - Hoya Ultra UV 0 - Thin. But I figured oh well, I'll use the push on that comes with it. Wrong. With the lens hood on, I can get the cap on with some effort, but I can't get it off without taking the hood off each time! Any of you folks run into this?

From another "Joisey" guy, good luck with the new lens. I used to have a no threads filter & can appreciate the annoyance, although, I guess the Canonlens & hood were wider than yours as I had no problem getting the cap off. If anything, it was too loose and would often fall off on its own.

My suggestion would be to attach a lens cap leash to the press on cap. You'd then have a string to pull the cap off with. The only risk you run is being considered a "dork" as per this thread;) http://www.photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=164004

My Hoya thin filters all have front threads. If your not happy return it for the right kind.

It happens. I have to take the hood off my bigma to get the lens cap off.

It takes like 5 seconds to take a hood off / put it back on. Not a huge deal to me.

Buy a hood hat and you can leave the hood on also.

tcaran, I have the same exact lens, and same exact problem. I just got to where I don't put on the push on lens cap. My reasoning is that I already have a filter on there for protection, so I'm okay with not having the lens cap on when I go out. Now, if I didn't have the filter on, then you can bet I'd always have a lens cap on it. Anyway, I think most people buy filters for protection more so than UV, so break free of the lens cap and let the filter protect your lens :)

Thanks - all the suggestions sound reasonable to me except taking off the hood - I just don't have your patience Thordic. But before I had read your replies I decided to call B&H sales and ask, and got a real, well, let's just say 'character', on the phone. He told me if I find a thin filter with front threads to give him a call, since he's he's never heard of it, then gave me a lecture about that's just how it is. I thanked him and hung up, figuring I'd come back here after work and see what the real scoop was.

If anyone reading this now has a thin UV with front threads that hold the lens cap, I'd appreciate knowing the model. Meanwhile, if nothing else I may go with one of the alternate suggestions. Thanks!
