I was in Victoria, BC last week on business, and had some free time to go out and do some shooting. I was walking along when, out of the corner of my eye, I see an enormous bird flying in the same direction I'm walking.

It was a Bald Eagle, and it was the first time I've ever seen one in the wild.

These shots are poor, primarily because, well, they could qualify as "butt shots", but given that these two shots mark the first time I'd ever seen one of these, I thought I'd post 'em:

Wow! Congrats, I THINK I only saw one about 5 years ago driving up to the my house....Breathtaking even from that angle. I really like the way you captured the wingtips on the second. Guess you were using the 70-200?

Congratulations on your first sighting of a wild bald eagle, Steve. It must really have been exhilarating for you to have captured even a small glimpse of this moment in photographs.

It really was pretty exciting. I'm a Bald Eagle freak. I don't think there's a more majestic creature on the planet. One of those "chance" things, though. Had I been walking the other way, I'd have gotten some killer shots. As it was, he (or, I suppose, she) flew past me only about 30 feet away...

They're closer than you think :)

(You'll need more legs than your 70-200 to get them if they're boring and in the nest; if they're flying, you are between them and the lake and will be okay @ 200)

I've seen that.

I also saw photos taken with a 100-400mm with a 2X converter, and about the best I could do was say " I think that's a bird".

I haven't been out there, so I don't really know, however...
