I was birding at the Macabebe wetlands (Philippines) last weekend when I noticed that the atmospheric haze conditions were optimal for unfiltered shots at the setting sun.

The haze softened the sunlight enough so it can be viewed/photographed without protective filters, yet not so hazy as to obscure details of the sunspot.

And here's the sunspot detail captured with the same combo:

(Warning - please note that shooting the sun without protective filters can cause serious damage to the eyes or photo equipment.)

Great shot. I've never shot any sun shots. What kind of filters are needed? I've got a UV, but I'm not sure that's enough. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks, Eric and Jamey.

Jamey, these are my first attempts at sunspots, and I'm still learning the ropes. However, nice folks in another forum, who shoot the sun a lot, have recommended the protective filter in this link:

And here's a link to a forum of solar observation enthusiasts:

The firts shot is very beautiful with the foreground hills and the layers of haze giving the viewer some perspective . Wonderful colors...great image. The second shot is amazing...those sunspots are very visible. Wow!!
