I'll be making a trip to WDW just about a year from now. What lens would you take along?

I was at Disneyland last month and decided to take my 70-200 2.8L and got some great shots (external link) (at least my kids think so).

I've had my eye on the 24-70 2.8L and have recently obtained my wife's blessing to purchase a new lens for the trip and must act fast before she comes to her senses :-o

So, what do ya think?

Yeah...24-70L. Sounds great. I think you'd love it. It's tough, it's sharp, it's got amazingly quick AF compared to its counterparts, and it's just generally a gem and a joy to use. Nothing better in the range, if you ask me. :-)

Your collection of lenses covers all the ranges. So what you need is a convenient lens: 18-200mm. You can either get Sigma 18-200mm (which has autofocussing problem above 135mm, but you can use parfocal technique to overcome this problem. It has better optics than Tamron 18-200mm) or Tamron 18-200mm.

Canon 1D Mk III/5D2, Sigma 50mm f/1.4, Sigma 24-70mm f/2.8 EX, Canon 24-105mm f/4L IS, Canon 70-200mm f/2.8L IS, Sigma 17-35mm f/2.8-4 EX, Canon 85/1.8, Canon 100/2.8 IS macro, Canon 135/2, Sigma 150-500 OS, Canon 500 f/4 IS

His wife told him he could get basically any lens. No offense, honestly...just seems an odd suggestion. He's going all the way to Florida for a trip. Not to mention, it'll be a year from now. I don't think the lack in quality, build, AF accuracy and speed, image quality, sharpness, color reproduction, speed, etc. are worth saving the money. For memories, I think you ought to have a lens that won't let you down (possibly). The flexibility just isn't worth losing all of that.

Okay, so maybe not *ANY* lens ;)

This trip is to celebrate my daughter's high school graduation and I do want a quality lens.

I've had mixed results with my 17-85mm IS. Great pics when there's good light so so pics when there's not.

I'm really leaning toward 24-70.

I just assumed a $1200 or so budget. About average for the moderately deep pocket-ed. ;-)a You certainly wouldn't be sorry if you got the 24-70. If you're not stuck on only Canon, the Tamron 28-75 might suit you as well. If you got that, you could get something else as well, like a 135 f/2L, or some other fast prime.

Lens for Disney? I'd strongly recommend a Canon 5.8 - 20.7mm f/2.8 - 5.3...........on the PowerShot S80.

Seriously, I've been to Disney a bunch of times, and would never consider bringing my 20D into any of the parks. Too big and bulky. It's hard enough to get around that park, especially with a couple of kids, let alone lugging around 5-10 pounds of bulky camera gear. It's always bright an sunny down in Disney so the small P&S will do just fine.

If you were gonna go with a P&S, wouldn't something like the S3 IS be a bit better? Hell..what do I know. The last P&S I actually owned was the SD500. Nice, but if I wanted real memories you can bet my usual rig would go with me. Kata H-14...I can walk around with my 20D and 24-70L on in that baby all day. 580 even fits in the side pocket.

I got a quote from Dell (the computer place) for the 24-70 2.8L for $1090 with free shipping. A buddy from work told me never buy from the Dell website. Always call and talk to a salesperson because they are willing to deal on the price.

I'd love to pick up the 85 1.2L but that's $2K. My daughter does 1 meter springboard diving and that lens would be awsome for that.

Of course, if you factored in the attorney's fees, that lens becomes quite a bit more expensive :-(

I've always talked to sales people, but for the life of me, they wouldn't come down a drop when I wanted to order my current 24-70L. They wanted like $1349, and the Indian woman kept saying that you got some sort of warranty through dell, but I buster her on that crap, and so she said a couple more bs lines, and I even quoted B&H and Adorama, and proved their reputation, and she put me on hold, came back, and said "no I'm sorry sir..I wouldn't be able to change prices. I'm not the one that sets them." I just gave up. If you got them to that price, that's pretty good. You get a $50 rebate, too. Nice.

S3 IS would be cool too, but I always go with something that fits in my pocket. Believe it or not, the Casio Exilim S2 was my camera of choice for events like those. Someone borrowed it and broke the LCD and it's not made anymore, but I'm looking to pick one up off eBay. Really tiny and light, fits in the front pocket of jeans without really noticing it's there, and it records the same (or more) memories as my 20D. I say more because on trips like those it's ALWAYS in my pocket and ready to go where the 20D is often left behind.

Having said that, on the day I DID bring my 20D with me, I'd probably go with my 10-22 and/or 70-200/2.8L IS.

I talked to a small business rep in Texas. All I did was ask him to provide me with a quote. My company does quite a bit of business with Dell. That could be part of it.

I have a small business credit line, and I've purchased about $10k worth of gear/computers from them on it, but that doesn't seem to have helped. Maybe I'll try again...kinda depressing knowing I'm gonna get another Indian chick who can hardly understand me, and vice versa.

I would guess my company does about $50K / month with 'em.

I'll be happy to PM you the rep's name. It's at work so it'll be Monday before I get it.
