Took a pic of a peach bud from a peach tree in my yard. Using rebel XT with kit lens in macro mode. it's pretty cloudy out. settings were auto at f5.6 1/500. I tried manual mode to get around f8 or so, but for the right exposure i'd have to use 1/125 or slower, and i didn't have a tripod handy. It looks like the focus in on the pollen balls and not the actual flower. The pic just doesn't seem that sharp. Would shooting in bright daylight make that much of a difference (allowing a smaller aperture)?

I also would've like to get a lot closer but it wouldn't focus at all, even on manual focus. I guess that's the limitation of the kit lens. (sigma 70-300 APO is on the way). PP is just a little unsharp mask, and tiny levels adjustment.

crititicism, (creative or not) is welcome, as this is the first time i'm really playing around with the new XT. thanks

Ok, the sun came out. first pic is with a canon 28-200 3.5 USM lens. Used a tripod this time at f8 in AV.

next pic is with the kit lens with tripod at f11 in AV.

I almost like the cloudy pic better. There are less shadows and distractions. What i really should've done is use the tripod when it was cloudy to get down to f8 for more DOF.

oh well, it was fun. and the pics came out pretty nice.

Welcome to the forum. This is a nice shot overall. DOF is a little shallow causing loss of detail. A suggestion would be to increase your iso from 160. Pick the f-stop you want and the shutter speed you can live with and adjust your iso to fit. Very nice image for your first post. We look forward to seeing more posting.

thanks. i agree on the DOF. maybe with a tripod i can get those slower shutter speeds. or just wait for some good sunlight.

what great photos, but LOVE no 1!!! I read somewhere that cloudy (or early morning, late afternoon)is better for flower photos anyway, better clarity of colour and more even distribution of light on the subject (no shadows) and is less harsh.

Hey man! Glad to see you posting on this board. I have to agree with you there on the shadows. The 1st one is my favorite. Also, because of the shallower DOF, the branch and buds next to it are more out of focus less distracting.

Maybe try focus stacking. Take a couple of pics - one with the focus on the petals and another on the pollen things. Then, combine the two images using a stacking program or in PS. That way, you can get the flower in focus and still keep everything else blurred. Might sound more complicated that it is, but it's not.
