Saturday at the half-acre wood...

more specifically, the half of our acre that's not wooded--the yard.

Some carolina chickadees have moved into a birdhouse on our front porch, and they looked hungry, so I put some seed in the feeder.
Instant bird party. There were house finches, titmouses, cardinals, a towhee, at least one white-breasted nuthatch, and this fella who has been away all spring.

WOW! Nice bird party you have there Joe! I don't have pictures of some birds you mentioned. You must capture them for me. Hmmm.... probably should speed up the gear hunting.

Interesting you said back yard. A back yard in the UK is an enclosed small area usually walled at the back of the house that's usually cemented with no lawn or grass. In your image we on this side of the pond call it back garden. Interesting difference.

Thanks. Not terribly noisy, but quite busy.

The size of a yard depends on location. Many subdivisions have 1/4 acre lots, some as large as 1/3 acre. We have an acre, half of it wooded. What you describe reminds me of my aunt's "yard" in Philadelphia. She could mow it by hand with clippers.

The turkey was spotted in my back yard, then hid in our woods and finally wandered into a weedy, unmown part of my neighbor's yard where I took that shot.
