A few weeks ago I posted a message asking what would be a good for macro, telephoto, wide angle. Currently I have the rebel xt with the 18-55mm kit lense.

I had been doing some looking around and trying to find 1 good lense for my overall shooting. After that and over time I will get some other lenses. I mostly take landscape type shots but do like doing people and macros, in that order.

I am considering the canon 28-135mm/3.5-5.6 IS USM. As I said I am looking for a primary lense and think that the IS feature might be important on a primary lense.... I did some research online and see mixed reviews.

I am, obviously not a professional but am serious about becoming good and do hope to maybe sell some pictures someday. Would I be selling myself short with the 28-135mm lense or is it a good lense.

If it is not a good lense what would be a good alternitive.

Oh, by the way, what do you all think of the kit lense? I feel I have taken some good shots for a beginner but I think I read that many people don't like the 18-55mm lense. Why not?

Thanks to everybody for the help!!!

Have a great nigh.

I had this lense and found it to be a good all rounder, great for sticking on the camera and knowing you have got a lot of eventualities covered, however.....as you get more confident and grow greedier with your demands you find you outgrow it pretty rapidly.

Agreed ... I had it and sold it within a few days. I knew after a dozen shots it wouldn't have the IQ I want. A good general lens for snapshot shooting tho'. Consider one of the fast aperture standard zooms like the Sigma 24-70 2.8 EX DG Macro, 28-70mm 2.8 DG EX or Tamron 28-70mm 2.8. These will offer better IQ and more creative possibilities. You can also add a 50mm 1.8 as well for pretty much the same you'd pay for a new Canon IS, at least in the UK. This would be a great way to move forward without breaking the bank.

I got this lens when I got my first DSLR and it only too me a few weeks to grow out of it. I can't really pick what is wrong with it - I have some pretty sharp pictures from it. It just lacks....pop. I'd advise you to consider something else personally. I would say get the 50mm 1.8 as the above person does because it's a great lens (a little flawed, but for the price, I can live with it).

It is a good average walk around lens but if I had the information that I do now I would not have bought it.
There are a lot better ones to buy

I generally agree with most of the replies about the limitations of the lens...that's why I'm selling mine and getting the 24-70 2.8L. The good news if you buy one used, you'll probalby get close to whAt you paid for it. Mine's for sale for $350...check out the Classified Sell section

I had the lens for a while, and it stayed on my camera the vast majority of the time. I sold it to help fund other another purchase.

I'm looking for a good "walk around" lens right now, and will probably end up going with the Canon 17-85mm. If another 28-135mm showed up at a good price, I might jump on it, but I find myself wanting something a bit wider than the 28mm...

If I had paid under 500.00 it might make me less critical ,but I paid over 600.00 and now know that I could have got an L lens instead for a little bit more.
It's a lesson in checking more before you buy and not buying from best buy

This lens is awesome! It is pretty much the lens I use all the time. I got the lens hood and UV filter for it. The build is great and you wont be selling yourself short with this lens. It is super sharp, super easy to use and it will be on your camera 90% of the time.

Next to my macro, I use it alot. Going to purchase an L lens in the near future but wont ever sell this lens. I think the images are sharp and have no complaints but it hunts a bit in low light.

mcapper, buy it, you wont be disappointed. You can find them used in buy and sell for about $350-$380
