Night Hawk

I found this family outside my construction trailer one afternoon. The next morning they were gone so I don't know if the chicks survived or not. Neither of the shots were cropped and in the second shot I got too close and ended up cutting off the wing tips as the adult came toward me. One thing that amazed me about this bird is the size of it's beak - so tiny for a bird this size.

How cool is that?! It's so hard to see a Nighthawk, and you get babies too! I'm jealous..

This is a bird that is hard to see usually . I have only ever seen one and it was flying and thats quite a show in itself. They are ground nesters but what a surprise to see them out in the open like this. Very nice shots, especially the first one.

The brown and beige colours look good against those gray rocks. Good sighting by you..

Nightjars (nighthawks, whippoorwills, chuck's Will Widows, etc.) are some of my favorite and most mysterious of all birds. You are so lucky to see such great beauty so close! I hope the chicks made it. How amazing to see baby nighthawks! Their beaks may be small but they can open their mouths so wide you'd be amazed.
