Well, after much hemming and hawing, I ordered a Sigmonster on the weekend -- and may have inadvertently caused some headaches for Camera Canada.
I first checked the price at Henry's ($7,000), then Camera Canada ($6,607). Thought I'd order through Camera Canada's retail outlet and drive to London to pick it up. Then I got to thinking that if (God forbid and fingers crossed) there was anything wrong with the lens, I'd have to drive it back (OK, so I'm old-fashioned ... but I have seen what courier companies can do to packages).
My wife made the decision for me. We were in between birding locations at the weekend and she told me to head for a Henry's store in Mississauga to order the lens. I obeyed.
At Henry's, the sales rep comments "big dollars" when I say I want to order the lens. He quotes me $7,000. I ask "what about a price match?" He says we'll see. I tell him "Camera Canada ... $6,640" (I couldn't remember the exact price). He comes back a minute later and tells me his manager has approved the price match!!
Sales rep called me this morning to say the lens is being shipped from Japan and should be here by the 17th.
He also mentioned that the manager of Gentec (which distributes Sigma lenses in Canada) is going to "look into" Camera Canada's price, which he says is "too low ..."
Ah well .... apologies to Camera Canada if they get in trouble ... but in the meantime, hope they keep lowballing prices.

cheers,
jim

Already using a Wimberley Head with my Bigma. Tripod is Manfrotto 441 carbon-fibre. It's rated to 13 lbs (which, coincidentally is how much the Sigmonster weighs). I'll see if I can cheat with the extra weight from the Wimberley, but may well be in the market for another set of legs.

cheers,
jim

Probably going to end up getting a solid Gitzo CF for it. Some will support 25 lbs.

That's what I hear ... but as I said, I'll see how it works out with the Manfrotto. It was an expensive model, but I may be able to sell it and help pay for a Gitzo.

cheers,
jim

nowhere near big enough to shoot pluto. Here's a photo of the "camera" that was used to discover pluto..... for scale, the metal film holder is about a foot across.

Notice that the "camera" is mounted on something that is essentially like a sidekick, only this one weighs maybe a ton.

Congrats!

I think you'll need a 1548 to support this baby. I get by with the cheap and heavy Manfrotto 475B, but someday I wish I can afford the 1548.

Got crazy last week and stacked 16x worth of TCs on mine (for a 12.8 meter focal length) just to see if the camera would take a pic at f/91. It did, but the VF was almost as bright as when it has the lens cap on....;-)a

now i know who i need to call if i want a closeup picture of the moon landers ;)

looks like it's a 350d, if so, it's an effective reach of 20480mm, so almost like having a lens the size of a tank barrel... too bad you can't take a full body picture with that lens though, you'll get blocked by the curve of the earth cuz of the distance you need

I don't hate macs or OSX, I hate people and statements that portray them as better than anything else. Macs are A solution, not THE solution. Get a good desktop i7 with Windows 7 and come tell me that sucks for photo or video editing.

Yes, that's the 350D, and it's my body of choice for the Sigmonster when shooting long.

In my rough tests and field experience, the 350D can shoot slower on the Sigmonster than the 1DM2 or 20D (about a stop shutter speed) before shake due to mirror slap becomes a problem.

The heavier duty mirrors of the 1DM2 and 20D are good for high fps shots, but their greater mass results into a more pronounced mirror slap. If using MLU, the 3 bodies are identical in shake characteristics.
