Well, let us see the picture you took with this "baby" on your camera!!!

Well, nothing really special, just to see if the camera will function at that focal length and Av (f/91). I doubt though if the Sigmonster (on the 20D's pixel pitch) will resolve anymore additional detail beyond a 2.8x TC. This exercise was done to satisfy my curiosity, and I see no practical use of that combo...:D

[QUOTE]He also mentioned that the manager of Gentec (which distributes Sigma lenses in Canada) is going to "look into" Camera Canada's price, which he says is "too low ..."[QUOTE]

That doesn't sound good. I have a strange feeling they may not wind up matching the price. If they do, you're lucky.

I put down a deposit on the lens and have a bill with the agreed-upon price. I don't foresee any problems with them honoring the quote.

Actually, it's Romy I am blaming for infecting me with the Sigmonster fever.

The heavier duty mirrors of the 1DM2 and 20D are good for high fps shots, but their greater mass results into a more pronounced mirror slap.

Romy, is that true even when the 1D personal function for quiet mirror operation is set? I don't have anywhere near as long a lens as this, but my experience is that this PF makes the 1D the quietest and least vibrating of the SLRs.

thanks in advance, as always, for your helpful advice...

I've heard stories of troops using the sigmonster when their M2 .50 cal died.

Whipped this up real quick because I couldn't resist. =)

David, I suppose enabling quiet operation via the 1dm2's PF 21 would help.

But I haven't tested this because it works only in single frame mode and the only time I mount the 1dm2 on the Sigmonster (and live with the shorter reach) is when I need the fast fps. If I don't need bursts, I prefer the 350d's reach.

Wow,. welcome to the Sigmonster Club!

Re Legs,. if the current legs are not up to the task,.. the recomended Gitzo set up is 1325 CF or 1340 in Aluminum. Most 600mm shooters do not get the 15xx series. Check in at Naturescapes and or birdasart.com for more info on this.

However, perhaps the issue is not so much weight as IS.. or lack there of. If the 1325 is ample for the 600mm with t-cons and IS,. maybe the added support of the 1548 is required?
But doesn't the 1548 have FOUR legs sections?
AFAIK the argument for the 1325 is that even though it is rated for less, it is in fact "less wobbly:" due to thicker leg sections.

Do NOT get any four leg section tripods...

Have fun!

CDS:
Thanks ... I have already been looking around for a possible replacement tripod ... was looking into the 1340. Didn't really want to go back to aluminum legs, but it appears to be a real sturdy beast. Price now rears its ugly head as well, since the layout on the Sigmonster will pretty much tap me for now. The 1340 is about half the price of the other legs you mentioned.
I have never considered four-section legs. Of the tripods I have owned over the years, all have been three-section for added stability.
Cheers,
jim

I have the same setup as Liquidstone (dedicated to 2 long lenses:) Bogen 475B legs and Bogen 3421 gimabl head w/ plate. Works great with the Sigmonster. I added Tri-pads to the tripod as well. Couldn't be happier. Though I admit that I do most of my wildlife shooting from my van (no tripod.)
