These things are about 7mm in length, can hover and have wasp-like markings. Any ideas?

Hi Rumjungle

It looks like what we call in the UK a Hoverfly, wasp mimic but harmless

(apart from the usual fly not being to fastidious in the personal hygeine dept)

I have hundreds of them on my walled garden. They are very prevelant at this time. Yes indeed it's the hoverfly. Some kids panic thinking that they are wasps.

You have managed to get the markings of this fly in good detail.
Good reflection of the light on it's wings.

Thanks Tony. This is my first encounter with hover flies and I had a heck of a time trying to get an in-flight shot. I had the 100mm with a 25mm tube and had trouble getting close enough to focus without scaring them away. I managed to get this one as it landed but, to be honest, it's a bit OOF so I'm stuck keeping the image size this small. Next time, I may just stick the tubes on the 100-400L.:D
