While I do think that the gun was jumped a bit, it would be nice to have some guidelines set and a place to look at all the photos and posts from those who have hosted one of the Nifty's without having to sift through 3,000+ posts...

I think it would be beneficial to those who haven't been following Nifty's travels from the beginning and would be a lot easier to track where he's been.

Having some guidelines would help cut down on the times that Nifty gets "lost" or shows up at a bad time.

I do think that Nifty should be based here and run through POTN, but it would be nice to have an archive to look back at and where the pictures won't disappear from when someone cleans out or renames their galleries and breaks links, changes photo hosts or forgets to pay their server bill.

i agree... anyways, there seem to be some seasoned members here who do keep this alive....

rules and place single place to see images is what i vote for.

You have to be careful, there would be logistical issues - not everyone wants a flickr site, or a photobucket site etc. So how will you get all the photos together on one site?

Thanks jjaenagle.. I know everything was with good intent.. We did host once on a server somewhere in the vast universe..

People drop out and lost the password and then the account expired and now all of those POTN adventures are gone. We've had people lose Nifty and all the memorbilia that went with it. It's people based and that means things won't be certain, and even with rules.. well, we all know about rules :D

I personally like the banter that goes on between photos, the explainations of where and when etc. It's like getting to meet people around the world. It would be nice if we could set filters on the long threads to see just photos...

Anyway, Thanks for everone caring for the Nifties and the POTN Nifty thread

DO THESE RULES LOOK OK? http://www.wheresnifty.com/about/rules/ (external link)

No, they don't. I don't have 300 posts, but that doesn't mean I can't take perfectly good care of Nifty, take some awesome pictures, and send him on his way. I think I am perfectly responsible enough to do that. Would you like my DL#, SSN, and references so you can do a background check?

What if I don't want a flickr account. Maybe it is free, but that shouldn't mean I HAVE to go open one! Actually, i think i DO have one, but i NEVER use it. I use Picasa instead.

Why do i have go to fill out a form? What was wrong with copy and pasting the list? When did you become "in charge"? I'm confused.... I can go make a website for Nifty too - does that mean I can be in charge?

I do agree there should be some sort of time limit on hosting Nifty, but That's about all I agree with in your post.

I also don't want to have to contact anyone in particular when my turn to have Nifty comes. Posting here to the thread is fine, but why all this other stuff? And *IF* i am going to blog about it, i'd prefer to do so in my own blog that I don't even have time for! Why should the Flickr stream be invitation only, also?

I really do not appreciate you hi-jacking this thread. This thread has been running in one form or another since 2005 as a strickly POTN activiity. Simply striking out and creating a website and setting up a set of rules to a thread that many of us have been active in for 5 years is a bit, well, rude.

If you want to start something on your own.. fine. Several people who participate here have actually DONATED lenses to keep the thread alive and active. I'm sorry if you aren't happy with the way things are going, but I personally have spent quite a bit of time organizing and keeping the thread alive, contacting members and working on donations. I don't want to open a Flickr account, If I want to write something about my hosting experience, I can do it here.. as to posting photos, all the participants are certainly welcome to do so.

I just feel that you have overstepped here. I have been watching and waiting to see what would happen, but now I feel the need to step in and request that you start your own thread and website and please feel free to donate a lens to the activity.

You are certainly free to sign up to host and post photos, but really, if you want to set rules and build a website and photo hosting site, please start your own thread.

Thank you for your understanding in this matter

Amen!

Easy turbo. Again, he jumped the gun, but had some good ideas. I actually think there should be a minimum post number and POTN activity restriction. Someone more active on POTN is less likely to disappear. The last host with less than 200 posts disappeared with Nifty last June. If someone got on the list two years ago and has only posted 150 times probably isn't all that interested in Nifty or in POTN in general. A person should be able to easily get to 300 posts by the time their name comes around to host Nifty.

And what happened when you get rid of you blog? When you get rid of your photo host? Then all record of Nifty's time with you is gone except for what you may have posted in the thread. I personally would like to see more photos from Nifty, but people aren't going to post up 100 photos here in the thread.

It sucks that 1 person with <200 posts has to ruin it for everyone with less than 200. I have my own "nifty" and am certainly not going to hock him. Just want to be part of the hosting and "show him around". And yes, since the list for the US is long, I am sure I will have 300 posts by then. People on the shorter non-us lists however, might not. Some people are more lurkers and don't post much, also.

I thought people who hosted Nifty were supposed to put pics up here (external link)? I've no problem with that. My statement was in reference to writing in some other blog. *IF* i am going to BLOG about it, it'd be on my own blog. Chances are, i wouldn't. I'd post a few things here, then have the pics uploaded to the other site.

Except that the password for that site was apparently forgotten and the person that administrated it is no longer around.

That's why a Flickr group would be nice. Everyone that host could get a free Flickr account (with a fictitious name if they don't want one in their real name) and simply tag the photos with a special "potnnifty" tag. Then they won't be lost when someone's host changes.

I'd just really like a way to browse the photos without having to scroll through 3,000 posts. I've been following Nifty for a couple of years now and have seen them all at one point, but I'd still like to see them again. I'm not going to spend hours and hours going through 60 posts with chit-chat to find one post with a coupe of photos. I think you'd get a lot more interest from new folks as well.

I'd also like to see a one-week limit for hosting US Nifty. At the current pace, its going to take decades just to get through the current list. That doesn't even take into account new folks signing up.

Just some thoughts.

And he didn't "ruin it" for everyone. I think that its good that we're having this discussion. That's where they went wrong. jjaenagle saw a lack of organization and tried to help out. I agree that he should have made it more of a discussion rather than appearing to try to take over Nifty, but I for one appreciate the attempt to get Nifty a little more organized.

I think 4 weeks is a bit long, but maybe two weeks? I dunno about anyone else, but I do have a life, and sometimes it's really busy. I work a lot one week, then barely at all the next. If Nifty came to me on my work week, i'd be lucky to have time to take him out of the box, let alone take any pictures! :)

Umm....Can I put my hand up and say that I actually agreed with jjaenagle's ideas ??

It seems to me that the movement of the Nifty through the list is extremely slow, and to me it seems like the main issue is that there is no-one to send reminders, or indeed keep track of what is happening.

I also agree that it would be a great idea if we had all the Nifty photographs in one place, be that here on POTN, Flickr or where-ever.

IMHO, Kudos to jjaenagle for trying to get the ball rolling, but that's just my opinion !!

Austen.

I just want to take nice photographs of people.
