They built the covered bridges for romantic encounters , like in the movie "The Bridges of Madison County". ;)

I love these covered bridges, have yet to come across one in Canada. So this one is foot traffic only CameraMan? I had never considered that they wouldn't support the weight of a vehicle.

Visit New Brunswick, home of 68 covered bridges, plus the longest one in the world at Hartland, NB!

That's because you don't have your own private jet. You should rectify that--post haste!

At it again today. I went out to the store and grabbed the camera and the Nifty Fifty.

1. The place I used to work. It's the only big plant in the area that is left. If this one were to ever leave we'd be in big trouble economically.

They own almost everything now. Funny thing is I got laid off because they were not making any money. 4 months later they bought World Color and a bunch of other small printing companies. They were #3 before I got laid off. World Color was #1 or #2 so I'm sure they're the #1 printer in the country now.

A few more from my excursion out onto the frozen Pelican Lake last week.

IMAGE: http://i1272.photobucket.com/albums/y381/patb20/Nifty50/sx_mtn1_zps89f058dd.jpg

Sioux Lookout takes it's name from this local landmark, Sioux Mountain. Hiking trails and a skidoo trail to the top provide a beautiful view of the Town
and the river and lake system leading here, for miles around. The Town is located directly across the lake.

Legend has it that Sioux Mountain was the site of a 1700s battle between the Ojibway and invading Sioux Indians. The Ojibway camped at the peak of
Sioux Mountain, so they could see the approaching Sioux canoes from a great distance and set up a successful ambush as the Sioux arrived. During the
ambush the entire invading party was killed or drowned except for one small boy, saved by a compassionate Ojibway woman. He was adopted into the
tribe and later became one of its most respected chiefs.

Apparently the story was substantiated by the bones and skulls of the Sioux warriors found along these shores, by the workers laying the railway track
and establishing the Town in the early 1900's.

IMAGE: http://i1272.photobucket.com/albums/y381/patb20/Nifty50/sx_mtn2_zps5106e49c.jpg

On the left, is the base of Sioux Mountain. A cemetary was only recently discovered not far from the railway tracks to the right of the Mountain's base (unseen),
which is thought to be the Town's original cemetary. The local Historical / Geneology Society has dedicated and marked the site, thus far isolating about
20 unmarked and one marked grave(s), with indications there are more to find.

This summer I plan to walk the track over the Iron Bridge and visit this interesting piece of our history for myself.

Great stuff Lyssi. I'm not a big fan of the snow and cold anymore but 20 years ago that would have looked like fun. :)

I enjoyed seeing these images, Pat, and hearing the bit of history that surrounds the name of your town. Your shots do tend to convey that sense of cold better than some snow images manage to do. Nicely done.

I love the shots, but am curious why the Mountain was named after the losers of the battle? ???

Aha, someone's paying attention. Good question!

Who knows... neither party even lived in this area. The Sioux were apparently chasing the Ojibway through the English River / Lake system, across a couple of Provinces. The Ojibway just chose this spot (the Mountain) to pull over and carry out the ambush.

All the naming seems to stem from the use of the Mountain as the lookout point - as in, they were able to see the Sioux when they were still miles away and had lots of time to prepare a successful ambush below.

From the Railway records, the Town was originally named "Graham" and somewhere along the line it was changed to Sioux Lookout. Probably by a Municipal Council who thought it would be a more romantic name/story for the tourist trade! ;)

I have been to New Brunswick once. We were on our way driving to Halifax. We ended up camping in Fundy National Park one night (After getting interrogated at the Canadian Border for a couple hours). Major wind storm that night and it sounded like our tent was going to pop and blow away. Some really nice people in an RV cooking dinner beside us (they had been there awhile and planned on staying even longer) were laughing at us trying to make PB sandwiches in the wind (stuff was going everywhere) that night and invited us over for some Lobster they were cooking (and shelter from the wind on the side of the RV). They were super nice people and we hung out with them that night. Beautiful area and I would love to go back sometime.

Still looks really cold there, but it would be fun to see. Never been far enough north to see that, but I have been to the Ojibway Hotel in Georgian Bay. That area is really a great place to get away from things. Thanks for braving the cold to get these pictures.

This is one of the stranger thing in Memphis. This was erected by the church World Overcomers. It is a call for the world to come back to Christ.

This is the statue outside Games Workshop in Memphis. They make the Warhammer & a Hobbit game. It is the table games that have the tiny figurines etc.

If interested I have more photos of the inside of the place I have taken in the past.
