A few more from my excursion out onto the frozen Pelican Lake last week.
Sioux Lookout takes it's name from this local landmark, Sioux Mountain. Hiking trails and a skidoo trail to the top provide a beautiful view of the Town
and the river and lake system leading here, for miles around. The Town is located directly across the lake.
Legend has it that Sioux Mountain was the site of a 1700s battle between the Ojibway and invading Sioux Indians. The Ojibway camped at the peak of
Sioux Mountain, so they could see the approaching Sioux canoes from a great distance and set up a successful ambush as the Sioux arrived. During the
ambush the entire invading party was killed or drowned except for one small boy, saved by a compassionate Ojibway woman. He was adopted into the
tribe and later became one of its most respected chiefs.
Apparently the story was substantiated by the bones and skulls of the Sioux warriors found along these shores, by the workers laying the railway track
and establishing the Town in the early 1900's.
On the left, is the base of Sioux Mountain. A cemetary was only recently discovered not far from the railway tracks to the right of the Mountain's base (unseen),
which is thought to be the Town's original cemetary. The local Historical / Geneology Society has dedicated and marked the site, thus far isolating about
20 unmarked and one marked grave(s), with indications there are more to find.
This summer I plan to walk the track over the Iron Bridge and visit this interesting piece of our history for myself.
A view of the opposite shore, behind which lies our Town.
