This is a sign on Hwy 51 coming from MS into Memphis, it used to have Neon on it at one point in the past by the looks of it.

Love this sign, perfect for Memphis; must be quite something lit up with neon!

This of course is the infamous Graceland, home of Elvis Presley.

QUOTED IMAGE

I'm struck by how quiet and unassuming Graceland actually is now... is anyone living there? And you are able to get right in there! Sad ending for this man with the beautiful voice...

So many year ago now, a girlfriend visited Graceland and actually was invited to a private movie night at a local theatre with Elvis and the boys... she sat a number of rows behind him and never spoke to anyone but it was memorable for her! She brought back a fistful of leaves off a Graceland tree, lol. I still have those two leaves she gave me somewhere, now I'll have to find them, I know I would never have thrown them out!

Great post Toolman, and great images! Thanks!

Pat

This is the wall outside Graceland, everyone signs it and leaves messages to the king...because you know he will come back from his home planet again soon.

:lol::lol::lol::lol::lol:
That made me think of the line from the movie "Men In Black" with Tommy Lee Jones (Agent K) and Will Smith (Agent J).

J: You do know Elvis is dead, right?
K: No, Elvis is not dead. He just went home.

Looking more at the wall outside Graceland. It's pretty unique with all the uneven rough texture, even without all the welcome-home messages. So many photo-ops, for we who are hungry for them at least!

Would have been funnier if they were talking about Michael Jackson. But considering he was still alive at the time (and had a cameo in the second movie), that wasn't possible.

Yeah for a mega superstar the house is actually pretty mundane other than some "interesting" decor choices. Maybe that was the thing back in the 50's when he bought it. You can still get in of course, they sell tickets for tours. They also have an auto museum with lots of his cars and you can also tour his two planes that were outfitted custom for him.

Sadly enough when I was typing it I did it in Tommy Lee Jones voice in my head

I am sure there are many photo ops, esp if you pay to get in and spend the time there.

A couple more

Saw this sign (oddly enough fairly close to Graceland) when driving around that day. Sadly Boobie's was no longer in business so I will never know what it was, I suppose the people of Memphis don't like Boobie's.

This is the currently abandonded Chisca Hotel in downtown Memphis. There are plans to turn this building into condos. The hotel was home to the radio station WHBQ from 1949-56. It broadcast a radio show called Red, Hot and Blue. It was on this show in 1954 that Dewey Phillips broadcast Elvis' first record, it was also the radio station that did the first interview with Elvis.

These pictures are of a chrome art statue thing outside the Cook Convention Center. It couldn't get back far enough back to get a shot of the whole thing, so I just went abstract to try to give an idea of how it is made anyway.

Revised the list for updates to the Canadian Section. Hope I've done this correctly!

At present we would like anyone wishing to host have at least a 200 post count or have been active on POTN for a year. Hopefully this will reduce the number of people that do not participate in a timely manner, or "forget" to move Nifty on to the next host, or simply don't care.

A few last images I found while cleaning up from Nifty's visit...

IMAGE: http://i1272.photobucket.com/albums/y381/patb20/Nifty50/airport-1_zps1b043983.jpg

We have a small, very busy Municipal Airport, mainly catering to the Native Communities further North. There are Medi-Vac services out of here as well for people who need emergency attention in a larger medical centre. There are some "larger" planes with scheduled flights to either Winnipeg or Thunder Bay, to connect with the major airline flights to take us the heck out of here for awhile! It's more common, and way less expensive, for us to drive to these cities to catch a flight. Only when I've been in a major hurry have I used the airport.

IMAGE: http://i1272.photobucket.com/albums/y381/patb20/Nifty50/airport-2_zps185c12fd.jpg

IMAGE: http://i1272.photobucket.com/albums/y381/patb20/Nifty50/airport-3_zps0ad798e0.jpg

Poor Nifty, I sure put him through some bad low light! What a hoot trying to catch one of these planes in the air with 50mm - they were like little mosquitos
suddenly appearing on the runway and by the time I figured out what direction they were going to go in and got to the right snowbank, they were up
and gone! Doesn't take these long to get in the air. (This is major cropped obviously)

IMAGE: http://i1272.photobucket.com/albums/y381/patb20/Nifty50/rpl2-1_zpse16e1437.jpg

This is the one I would have liked to show you taking off on the lake, but I never found a good close spot to shoot them from. They have a ski/wheel combination going but I'll bet it's a bumpy takeoff. They are up and gone quickly as well. Lots of activity on this shoreline in the summer, when there is a crowd of planes on floats. I've flown off the water but never the ice - don't think I want to!

Our education facilities go up to grade 13. For college or university our kids have to go to a larger community. Same highschool I went to but a lot bigger now.

Alan, is that house in image 7 even safe to go into? Or would you be afraid it would fall down on you?
Just curious.

Thanks,
Alan

Um, I'm afraid to sneeze anywhere near it. The person who owns it has horses and they were grazing right up next to it a couple weeks ago. I've been hoping to see that again but haven't. He has some beautiful horses. Lots of people have horses. I don't know why. They don't eat them that's for sure but I do see people riding horses all the time though.

A poignant scene with the overgrown brush and the missing track. I really like this image Toolman.

I'm so glad you showed us the inside, they are beautifully restored! All that wood is amazing. If I ever get to a place that still has the trolleys, I'll be riding them from seeing your images. I'm fascinated with the trolleys!
