Ottawa, Canada

There's been a market operating in this location since Ottawa's early days as a lumber town. It's name -- Byward Market -- comes from the original name for Ottawa, which was Bytown. And Bytown was named after Lieutenant Colonel John By, the engineer who built the Rideau Canal which connects Ottawa to the St Laurence River. This building isn't original but I think it's been there since 1870 or so. Inside are shops and outside, it's surrounded by market stalls in the summer months.

More from the Byward Market. These were taken a week or so ago, just as the planting season was getting underway.

The Byward Market attracts buskers like this fellow.

And, while not quite as prolific as in Holland, we have bikes too. ;) These are Bixi bikes, which you can rent and drop off at various locations in the city.

One of our big spring attractions is the Canadian Tulip Festival. This glass enclosed stairway (leading to a parking garage) has been painted for the occasion.

The Canadian Tulip Festival had its origins when the Dutch Royal Family presented Ottawa with a gift of 100,000 tulip bulbs in 1945 in appreciation for giving safe harbor to then Princess Juliana and her family during the N*zi occupation of the Netherlands. Every year since, they have sent more bulbs and the festival boasts having a display of more than a million tulips each year.

I've done a lousy job of photographing the beautiful display of tulips with the Nifty so don't have much to show for it. But, basically Ottawa is filled with tulip beds like these, all thanks to the Dutch people.

I showed a shot of the Parliament buildings way back in February. Here it is from another angle, this time looking across the Rideau Canal. Last time it was snowy, now we have green!

You have been a good host Julie, I don't think that any of the comments are about you. Although it is very Canadian of you to apologize for something you haven't done. :)

I'm so glad that I don't have to be the one to start this discussion again! :p

Oh my goodness, Julie! I most definitely was not thinking of you when I said that!!! You have been a most excellent host and we all know that you simply cannot send Nifty on for lack of Canadian hosts!

But how great it is to see some pics again. Canada covered in snow and ice is beautiful and Canada green and colourful is beautiful also! These shots are all wonderful.

And I would love to get one of those bicycles!!

Speaking as someone who has literally had to go and physically chase down a Nifty lens from a lazy member who didn't shoot and wouldn't send it on......

Now I'm curious as hell!

Killjoy wrote in post #15952585 (external link)
A lot of people think its a really cool idea, and think they'd like to get on the list.
Then once they get their hands on the lens, their lives have changed and don't have the time or the drive to go shoot with it.
The U.S. list used to be so long, it took over a year to get Nifty. There are a few folks who have had the decency to request to move themselves down the list because they are not currently ready, or remove them completely for whatever reason. But not everyone has that decency.
That's also part of the reason that the request for certain time on the forum and minimum posts have been added. That too has not been set in stone. If you know someone and are willing to vouch for them, they too can get on the list.

I just wish that people would feel that putting yourself on the list is to commit yourself. Of course circumstances can change but as you say, then have the decency to remove yourself from the list or move down on it until it is more convenient. This not posting images is not the way to go.

As one of those users that shamefully did not take enough photos and didn't move nifty on in a timely fashion, I will say that although some times the best intentions might not always become reality. The latest hosts have done a fabulous job of hosting, and have set a very high bar. If I take the opportunity to host nifty again I will try and be an appropriate host.

It took courage to post that. Thumbs up! :)

Just got nifty shipped out.

At present we would like anyone wishing to host have at least a 200 post count or have been active on POTN for a year. Hopefully this will reduce the number of people that do not participate in a timely manner, or "forget" to move Nifty on to the next host, or simply don't care.

Good question, Peter.

Redjamesg received the Nifty from me over 3 weeks ago but no images yet.
MrWes has posted 4 images but that was 2 weeks ago.

Why do people sign up for this when they're not prepared to go out and shoot?

I know I've been a bit reluctant to post photos on this hosting, I have been out there shooting, but just haven't had the time to process them.

I know it's the usual jibber jabber, but my working hours have been murder on me these past weeks.

Thanks, but I don't think it did. It was reality. You as well as others from recently set a pretty high bar that I hope gets maintained.

Trever, I was not pointing fingers. Speaking for myself, my hosted images are nowhere near what the most recent hosts have done.
As you've said, they set the bar pretty high.

There have been several "hosts" who received Nifty, didn't shoot, and it took an act of congress to get them to send it on.

Levina, since you are that curious.....
There was a "host" in the Bay Area who received Nifty, held it for months, and didn't shoot.
He also claimed he was too busy to send it on.
It took four trips to his house to convince him to release the lens to me. It was about 50 miles round trip each time. Three trips by me, and a fourth by a coworker who lived closer than I did.
This guy (a buddy of mine) offered to go get it. I almost let him.

"Bear" as he is called by his "Brotherhood" has no problem confronting people, and usually gets his way. ;)

Edit: I've known him since High School, before he started riding with any clubs.

Some people hunt with a gun. I use a Canon.
