Some random shots from a couple of days ago.

Shipbuilding and repair has been one of the big industries here in
North Vancouver ever since it was founded.

boating in general is also very popular.....these boats are in a marina under the Iron Workers Memorial Bridge

I like these shots, Kevin.
That's a rather unusual looking bridge. Very photogenic. And I'm glad I'm not the only one posting pics of bridges! :-P
I find the floating houses interesting. The houseboats we have here are usually dwellings built on a boat, but some look like proper houses. Still, we call all of them houseboats. I had planned to do a batch on houseboats because they come in all kinds of forms and flavours.

I'm curious, what does the ALLIED in the first pic mean?

This artwork represents what had by the mid 1940's become a community of squatters living in
cabins on the intertidal mudflats in this area of North Vancouver. By the 60's it was a community of
hippies and loggers looking for a way to get back to nature. There was a lot of tension between the
North Vancouver residents and the squatters and in Dec 71 the civic authorities burned most of
the shacks to the ground to make way for development in the area.
The English novelist Malcolm Lowry lived here fro 1940 until 1954 and wrote Under The Volcano while
here.
These 3 pieces are scale replicas of of shacks that were occupied by Lowry, an artist named Tom Burrows
and Dr Paul Spong, who later helped lead Greenpeace's Save The Whales campaign. They were gifted to
the District by the artist so that they could be placed here very near to where the originals once stood.

Thank you Levina. I also like bridges and hope to have some more to show soon.
I think that ALLIED is just the name of the company that does the building/repair
of the ships.
We do have a great variety of houseboats around here....I will try and get more
shots of them.

Got to love them hippies!
I really like those replicas, Kevin.

So you call those floating houses houseboats too.
Will be interesting to see more of them.
Do you also have regular houseboats, of the type that were proper boats once and then made into dwellings?

Thank you very much Levina.
I do call the houseboats.....some call them floating homes.
I think that we do have some regular houseboats.....I will
see if I can find some for you.

Here is a 3 shot pano that I shot yesterday. There is a small church
hidden in the woods at the end of this little cove where i am attending
a wedding this week.

Seems like a lovely location for a wedding!
Will the guests be arriving by boat? :-P

I went out yesterday to shoot House Martins. Not an easy task, but the ultimate test for my new 1D4.
The House Martins nest in this old building. Every little nook, crevice and niche where there is protection from the elements is occupied at the moment and they are on eggs. I don't think there are hatchlings yet as then traffic would be much more intense.

These city House Martins are remarkably comfortable around people. The window cleaner on his ladder and not too far away from the nests under the roof's ridge, doesn't disturb the birds at all.

A closer look at the colourful entrance of the house.
The elderly lady of the house is quite weird. Once I was shooting the House Martins and I had parked my bicycle against the fence, not locked as I was right there. Suddenly I see her take my bike and walk away with it. So I say "Eh, ma'am, where are you going with my bicycle?" She says: "Oh, it's yours?" I nod. "Oh," she says, "I just thought I'd put it somewhere else." I said "You know, I'd rather you didn't."

That made me laugh so hard. I can just picture it!

I saw the group come my way and just walked towards them, knelt down and took a few pics. It was a spontaneous thing and it was all in the open. I mean, I didn't stake out a school and/or hide behind a tree to take candid shots of children. And of course I'm a female so that makes it less threatening. I also think we're a bit more relaxed here about people taking pics of kids than Americans; we don't automatically assume they're perverts. And in this case, like I said, I was in plain sight, the teacher saw me, smiled and waved, I smiled and waved back and the kids started to goof around when they saw me taking their picture. Just a natural, spontaneous thing and all was good.

Yeah, that wouldn't work here. My face would be plastered on a billboard and I'd be on some sort of list.

At present we would like anyone wishing to host have at least a 200 post count or have been active on POTN for a year. Hopefully this will reduce the number of people that do not participate in a timely manner, or "forget" to move Nifty on to the next host, or simply don't care.

* Though, this doesn't seem to alter the fact that people tend to forget to send Nifty on and tend to post very little... with some exceptions! To sign up to be a host, please copy the list completely, add your name to the bottom of the sub-list that is in your area of the world, paste the entire list into a new post with your name added.

Very nice shots Levina....that is a nice looking old building.

I went out to catch the sunset last night with this shot in
my mind. I am vary happy with the results. It was our 20th
anniversary yesterday, but unfortunately my wife has to
be away so I went and got this shot.

Just thought I would pull the list forward..

Glad you didn't lose your bike, Levina.
How helpful of her

Kevin, those are beautiful shots around the water.
I too, and curious as to how the guests will arrive at the church!

Thank you Joayne.
The guest will be arriving by car, there is a road there that
can not be seen in the photo.
