Well, this time I thought I would see if I could shoot birds with Nifty. I grab the camera and see two light spots moving under water. Hmmm, fish? Nope. One surfaces and it is a Great Crested Grebe and he is charging! As you can see, the 50mm is really really bad for this stuff. They were way down in the canal and focusing was hard and missed more than once. I cropped as much as I dared, but these are obviously seriously bad shots. Still, the story is cool so I'm posting the whole lot of them. ![]() Then the other Grebe surfaces and before I know what is happening they are at each other's throat. I mean, these guys were fighting for real! Wild Birds of Europe

They have a nest close and they also have offspring from a first brood. In short, this is their territory and you better believe it! So now we have two fighting Grebes and two adult Coots (a couple) protecting their territory and most importantly their offspring. One of the youngsters can be seen in the upper left corner of the frame. He stays where he is, just looks at the scene. Wild Birds of Europe

He jumps right at them and sits on them, pushing them under water. At the same time two more Coots come in. They're siblings from the Coot's first brood of the year. One comes charging in, the other who had been watching from a distance also comes a bit closer now.Wild Birds of Europe

You want something wider. I have taken shots with the Samyang 14mm before and I thought that was a very good lens for it as it covers so much sky. Of course even then it's all about timing and that is seriously difficult with lightning bolts as they strike when you don't expect it and don't when you do. Wild Birds of Europe
