You're going to have to give us a hint as to what camera you are using.

Assuming you mean for your G6, you don't have a lot of options. You can purchase an adaptor (look here (external link)for the recommended source) and a teleconverter add-on lens. (The same adaptor can be used with wide-angle converters and filters.) However, handy as they are, a teleconverter is no match for a good zoom lens and a larger sensor... which is probably what those great bird shots you are seeing were taken with.

"And on the 8th day, god created digital SLR cameras"

Seriously, to be quite honest, I can't imagine birding until you've got an SLR. The image quality at full zoom just isn't there in "compacts", even G-series, which are great cameras.

Ryan,

you will have to accept the fact that a conversion lens (even a very good one) will only work on the longest setting. That's one of the limitations of using a compact digital camera with an additional add-on lens.

There is the Crystalvue sharp-shooter 8x lens (external link)that was rated quite positively some years ago when it was launched and when DSLRs were still very expensive. Maybe it would solve your problem, but I don't even know if it is still sold.

But - as Ronald already said - this is not what you normally use a compact digital camera for. Sorry if you don't want to hear that, but it is the truth.

'good zoom lens + larger sensor' = digital SLR.

Best regards,
Andy

And - as mentioned - also take a look at that 8x lens. It will have similar deficiencies as the 3x lens, but 8x is always better than 3x for birds.

What brand is the 3x lens you already got?

Best regards,
Andy

I wasn't saying you had to buy another camera period- I just meant that the only way you're gonna get those "amazing bird shots" that you saw in the other forums is probably with an SLR. Point and shoot's just weren't designed for closeup wildlife and birding. That 8x will be a darn good place to try, though.

Aren't the small cameras excellent for use with a fieldscope? If you could find a way to attach a spotting scope to your camera it could work out and you'd get tremendous amounts of zoom. Search for digiscoping on the Internet.. sorry I can't give more specific advice than that because I have never really tried it, I just know it exists.

There's a F-Adapter for sale on EBay. Says it allows a telescope to be connected to a G6.
Sounds fun..............
