Flowers with a macro lens

I think i have found out the hard way , at to what is proper and what is not proper for a dof with flowers using a macro lens , but would like your opinions on it here are two examples of what it mean!

At what point does one say thats enough D.O.F and at what point does one go for more D.O.f.
AS WITH PHOTOS one must judge and determine what he or she is trying to say with the photo, But many a time one may feel that one has done it right but yet others do not see what the photographer has tried to do or why?

very well done, colours very vibrant, pictures are crisp, good job

I would expect to have at least one entire blossom to be in focus - not just the stamen and pistil

Using that criteria neither image above would qualify.

Normally I would agree with Bob but I think a shallow DOF on a flower is particular to each shot. Sometimes it works and sometimes it doen't. I prefer number 2 here because the shot isn't straight on so the shallow DOF tapers nicely off of the petal.
