Saw this bird in a tree near my house today. Anyone know what species it is?

Your location would assist in identifying. There is something odd about the appearance of this hawk, to me. is he wet or sick? At first, I thought Red-shouldered Hawk but the black face has me puzzled.

Powerful-looking, colorful bird. Is this it?

Someone told me they think it's a Cooper's Hawk.

It is not a Cooper's hawk. Do yo have any other views of the bird you can post? Because it is wet and bedraggled and its plumage is all awry, ID is difficult with this view.

What I can discern from his chest feathers that arent wet and whatever is that he is a red shouldered or broad wing. We dont really have all that many species of hawks around here. Too bad you only have the one angle.

But............I still dont know.

I vote a wet, dark-morph Red-shouldered Hawk...having a really bad day. Even so, the legs looks pretty "thick" which make me wonder. You should post this on birdforum.net in the ID section - those guys know everything.
