http://www.roava.net/~henderbc/yarc.htm (external link)

It converts a RAW to TIFF, creates a 640x480 thumbnail and a webpage in 13.3 seconds in my Windows 2000 PIII 600 (dual)!

It's an MS-DOS prompt program, but in Windows (2000) it's easy to use it just opening the MS-DOS window, dropping Yarc.exe on it, hit space, drop the CRW on it, hit space and the few switches needed and hit enter.

Pekka:

Thanks for letting us know about this one. I tried it out and it works great. I will be asking Bruce Henderson if the log file Yarc creates which contains "a subset of the EXIF information" can be expanded to include all of the EXIF info like ZoomBrowser does. I'll post his response.

You can also just drop a whole folder full of CRW files from Explorer onto a desktop "shortcut" icon and all files processed at "as shot" with .log .jpg .tif and index.html created in original folder.

I sent Bruce a G1 file yesterday as prev. version didn't work on G1, only D30 files, he came back with it within hours ... not too shabby :-) Good peeps.

BTW, Bruce's last comment re. log file, so far that's all he's been able to pull from the CRW, but working on it. All the exif is in the .jpg file, so need to use your Exif or Thumbsplus, etc. to view it

Can Exif or Thumbplus, etc., give all of the data that ZoomBrowser can?

One note re. exp. compensation or flash compensation in Exif is expressed as fraction, depended on how the camera is set up. If you have compensed 1/2 stop, then 1/2 means 1/2 stop. 2/2 is 1 full stop ... 3/2 is 1 and a half stop, etc. Same if set up for 1/3 stop compensation.

Focal length for the G1 is a weird fraction but, again it works ... just do the math to get actual (not 35mm equiv). I don't know why but D30 displays focal length correctly.

I'll have to take at look at ThumbsPlus again as my version is old since using Exif. I don't like the thumbnail files ThumbsPlus leaves all over the place :-( but if you like a light box type display with configurable info for the "slide" captions, it's very good.

Exif does not display .tif files, which may be a problem for some. I'm trying to see if that upgrade can be made.

Thom:

I tried EXIFinfo and EXIFread. Neither could give me exif info from the jpegs created by Yarc. They could not give me exif info for jpegs created in photoshop. They DID give me exif info for jpegs created in the camera (not converted from raw).

Maybe I'm not using the software correctly.

John - I have no problem with Exif for G1 files. I assume you are using Exif Viewer from my previous post?

http://members.nbci.com.../mkowalski.1/index.html (external link)

Are you running Yarc on a directory that has BOTH the .crw and .tmb files created with each RAW file? You need both in the read directory. In fact, Exif will display the exif info from the .tmb file even before converted to .jpg by Yarc. So ... be sure to copy all the files from your camera's cf card, incl. thm files and browse that folder with Exif Viewer, the tmb should show up with exif info, when switching to thumbnails and trying full view, you'll see a little pic, just the 160x120 tmb file.

Once that works, run Yarc again, you should then have the exif info in the jpg. Exif will display the .thm file as well as your new .jpg (but not the .tif) so you'll have two lines for each file, but the jpg will be the larger size.

Use Tools > Options > Columns to pick the columns you want displayed. There are two ISO columns, use Canon ISO, in fact click on the Canon default and then fool with the ones that don't display info, sometimes one from the Standard (up at top of list) work better. You can drag column headings around to get in preferred order.

Good luck and let me know if any more problems

PS does not save the exif info with a .jpg ...

Thom:

Bruce just e-mailed me. He's got a new version available that captures all the exif info. Damn, he's fast. I'll test it out tomorrow at work.

Thanks for the info about the files. I've never looked at the files in the directory because I've left it up to ZoomBrowser to download everything. I will look at it in the morning.

Thanks.

Thom:

I tried Bruce's new version of Yarc and it does display alot of info. I also tried Exif again and I got it to work.

The problem I was having was the missing .thm/.tmb files. When you download using ZoomBrowser it changes the filename from CRW_0469.crw to 104-0469_CRW.crw. You only see the one raw file in the directory. It must store the exif data somewhere else in its own database file. I searched the drive and nothing came up with those extensions.

The microdrive had crw and thm files. I presume the tmb files are embedded somewhere. I used Yarc on them and the exif data was there. I sent Bruce some additional info. I'll let you know if he does anything with it. Thanks for the help.

Sorry for confusion on file extension, I was just typing away not thinking (I think it is GraphicsWorkshop that uses .tmb or whatever) ... you're correct, it's the ".thm" files that you need to preserve when transfering RAW files.

BTW, that corrects my prior post, ThumbsPlus uses a .tDB file to store thumbs in the program's folder, DOES NOT leave extra files, that was GraphicsWorkshop. Delete the image in the app, but the .tmb file was left behind until you deleted with WE.

I bypass Zoomdozer completely, just use Windows Explorer and a USB CF reader to transfer entire folders off the cards, I get the files with original folders, file names, .thm, etc. intact. Files are kept in their original "1xxcanon" folder scheme on my drives, and whenever I modify a file I always just edit the name, leaving at least the image number intact, that way I can always go back to the original folders for my "negatives." Yarc makes that first extraction so nice, huh? So far I haven't burned any archive CD-R yet as I have (3) 60GB drives and auto-incremental-backup to a Unix server every night. I shuttle images I'm working on around on CF, Syquest cartridges and CD-RW.

Yep, Bruce is doing us all a lot of good. I like the expanded .log file now. Much better, and ID's custom functions, etc. for the D30 better than Exif (even thought it is there). I just don't know what to do with them, I see everything I need in Exif anyway.

I tried Yarc 1.4.5b. What is the log file and where is it located? Is this the txt file that's generated for each image processed?

I've just been using the txt file generated from Chris Breeze's download utility for EXIF data. Should I be using a EXIF utility? What would the advantages be?

Thanks,

Doug

Well, it doesn't line in columns too well here, but below is a screen capture of the target directory after running Yarc. I used yarc . so all options ran with output "as shot" in the camera. The .log files will open with Notepad if you double click the file in Explorer, or open from what ever text editor you choose. See capture from a .log file below.

I have no clue what to do with the log files as all this info is available in reading exif info from the .jpg generated by Yarc. Maybe to build a database? The D30 log file is more informative, and as Bruce recommends, check the output carefully for errors, Yarc is a work in progress.

As long as you run yarc "dot" or use the -l switch in the command line, you'll get this file along with other switch selections.

Which exif utility/browser you use is personal taste ... so far I prefer Exif Image Viewer, see my many references to it elsewhere.

The log file is the text file with the .log extension.

Yarc is great for me because I don't use Chris Breeze's downloader. I have a 1GB microdrive with a card reader.

This is what Yarc has done for me:

1) I do not need ZoomBrowser any more.

2) I can now download the raw files (.crw) and the data files (.thm) directly to my hard drive using the card reader. Very fast!

3) Yarc can create a whole directory's worth of jpegs at 640x480 or smaller and place them on a web page for viewing. It also creates the .log file with the exif data (camera settings). You can use the log file to set up your own database of your photos. I imported a few into a spreadsheet and it worked fine. Or you can use an Exif reader.

4) Since I'm keeping the .thm files I can now import the raw file directly in to Photoshop using the twain driver. I don't need 9+MB tiff files cluttering up my hard drive any more.

Note: I could not import a raw file that was downloaded using ZoomBrowser because ZB would not keep the .thm intact on the hard drive.

What a great day!!!

Bruce Henderson has been very responsive to my requests for minor modifications. So responsive that he makes the changes the same day. Amazing customer service. The guy should work for Disney.

Thanks and good luck.

Thom,

Thanks for that explanation. Everything is very clear now. I guess I'll have to play around with it to see how to organize the Exif data....as you said perhaps into a database.

One last question:

Is a new HTML file generated each time you run Yarc or are new 640 x 480 jpegs just added to the existing HTML file in the directory?

Doug
