How do you Synch image numbers between old and new cameras'?

e.g you may have a folder with MG_5000 froma previous camera then , if you have formatted the CF card which I awlays do, when you use a new ca,mera you end up with IMG_0001 or something, at any rate you get duplicate numbers for diferent image files

How does one relaibly and consistantly resolve this?

You mean on your computer? If so, why not simply rename the files to something more meaningful after transferring them from the card(s)?

For example, if you have a series of shots of a wedding, then just change "IMG_0001", IMG_0002" etc. to "Wedding0001", Wedding0002" etc.

This can be done all at once by batch processing using a utility like Rename Wiz - fast and easy.

Renaming can also be done during the download process with Raw Shooter Premium. Other download software is also available that will do it. That may be your easiest solution.

You might just put a CF card with an image 'IMG_5001' in your new camera so it continues to number from there...

Best regards,
Andy

some cameras, some lenses,
and still a lot of things to learn...
(so post processing examples on my images are welcome :D)

If you are using Mac OS X then I can recommend "File Wrangler". It is a freeware utility for renaming folders containing many files (e.g image files). It has the ability to add a prefix and/or suffix, it has a find and replace function and many more advanced features. Sounds like the kinda thing you're looking for, and it's free!

Hope this is helpful,

Paul.
